Last Saturday was a beautiful day to partner with Katy DeMent for some river-side papermaking at our Marina along the Ohio River! Katy harvested Hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, and combined it with multiple different materials to make paper pulp. We used water from the Ohio River and everyone pulled multiple sheets of paper, each representing art, ecology, and place. There are infinite ways to engage with our waterways and strengthen the Clean Water Movement 💧

To finish up September, we conducted our monthly Shell Patrol along the Ohio River in Beaver County where we ran our nurdle trawl and collected YSI samples. Our patrol focused on monitoring long standing issues and known pollution locations. We also observed plenty of wildlife, including Belted Kingfishers and Great Blue Herons!

We had a blast last week at our Sustainable Clothing Swap at CoStar Brewing! It was a great evening spent swapping, sipping, stamping, and connecting with community members about the importance of prioritizing second hand clothing. Thank you so much to Redd-Up Pgh and Style for Good PGH and all who came out to join us for such a fun night!

We were so excited to partner with Lawrenceville Distilling for a special event, Foraging our Rivers! Materials from our local floodplains were foraged to make unique cocktails (Goldenrod, PawPaw) and natural dyes (Black Walnut, Amur Cork). We sipped 'Allegheny Daiquiri' or 'The Monongahela Fog' while dyeing cotton bandanas rich brown or brilliant yellow, discussing riparian ecosystems and water quality. Stewardship not only benefits our rivers, but can be delicious and beautiful too!
