During the pandemic, artist Larsen Husby was invited to design Touching Not Touching, a pair of intertwined labyrinths for an unused grassy overflow parking lot at Silverwood Park, but travel restrictions meant the artist couldn’t be onsite for installation. To translate Husby’s drawing across the enormous landscape, Silverwood Park Director, Alyssa Baguss, mowed a grid into the field and used the same grid-enlargement technique taught in middle-school art classes to map the design – only this time, the drawing tools were a lawn mower and spray paint. The labyrinth was maintained through the summer while the grass and flowers between its paths grew into habitat. At the end of the season, the entire artwork was mowed away and the field eventually returned to its original use.
