He was standing at death’s door. Then a stranger gave him more time.

In February 2024, Derek went to the emergency room struggling to breathe after months of worsening symptoms. Doctors discovered his iron counts dropped to dangerous levels and diagnosed him with a rare autoimmune disease called Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.

He needed a blood transfusion immediately.

That transfusion became a critical turning point, giving Derek’s body the support it needed to begin the fight toward recovery.

“When you find yourself standing at death’s door, you truly understand how precious every blood donation is,” Derek says. “Someone I will never meet took the time to donate, and that gift helped save my life.”

Derek may never know the person who donated the blood he received. But he knows what their generosity gave him: hope, healing and more time with the people he loves.

Someone you’ll never meet may be counting on you, too. ❤️ Make an appointment to give blood: vitalant.org

🩸 Platelets may be small, but their role in patient care is anything but.

These tiny blood components help control bleeding and are essential for patients undergoing cancer treatment, surgery, organ and stem cell transplants, and other complex medical procedures.

Unlike red blood cells, platelets have a shelf life of up to seven days, making a consistent donor supply especially important for patients in need.

Every platelet donation helps support the patients who depend on this critical component of blood. Learn more: vitalant.org/platelets

For Terri, retirement opened the door to a new chapter of service.

Since May, she's been volunteering at Vitalant blood drives, helping support donors and staff, while also giving her time to P3R events by assembling race day bags and handing out medals. Her passion for helping others is a reminder that small acts of service can have a big impact.

Blood drive volunteers are essential to our mission. Their support helps create a welcoming environment for donors and contributes to the lifesaving work that begins with every blood donation. Thank you, Terri, for helping strengthen our community one volunteer shift at a time. ❤️🩸

Human blood falls into four different blood groups: A, B, AB and O. Your blood also has what is known as an Rh factor: It either contains a certain protein or it doesn’t. (This is the positive [+] or negative [-] after your blood type.) The possible combinations create eight different blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+ and O-.

You don’t need to know your blood type to donate blood. Donating blood is a great way to find out your blood type - we’ll tell you after you donate. And, whatever your type, every donor is needed and every donation transforms lives—including your own!

Schedule your donation today at vitalant.org, learn your blood type, and save lives.

❤️ Remembering Jamayah, “Mayah”

Mayah lived a life centered on helping others. A talented seamstress, educator, mentor, volunteer, and organ donor, she shared her gifts freely with everyone around her.

As a teacher at Mt. Ararat's Community Activity Center and a longtime camp counselor at East End Cooperative Ministry, Mayah touched the lives of countless children. One of her favorite jobs was at Pretty Princess Parties where she dressed in character for children's events and gatherings. Even after her passing, her generosity continued through organ and tissue donation, helping others in need.

"She was and is an angel," her mother shared. "I couldn't have been blessed with a more perfect daughter."

Today, Mayah's parents honor her memory each year by helping others through a blood drive held in her name and to bring awareness to Sickle Cell Disease. Their hope is that her legacy of compassion will continue to make a difference for patients who depend on lifesaving blood transfusions.

Join us in celebrating Mayah's beautiful life and the lasting impact one person can make. ❤️

Who says donating blood can’t be fun and exciting?

Just ask Annette! She goes into every donations hoping to upgrade her donation to a Power Red, but in the past, she hasn’t been eligible. But, this time ... this time was different. 🎉

“I always go into my donation wanting to do a double red, but I’ve never been eligible. To my surprise, I was able to do a double red donation, and I was super excited!”

That’s an upgrade worth celebrating. With a Power Red donation, Annette was able to give more red blood cells in one visit for patients who may need them during a blood transfusion.

Ready to Power Up your next donation? See if Power Red could be an option for you and make your appointment today at Vitalant.org.

Just days before starting kindergarten, five-year-old Caison was diagnosed with leukemia. What began as leg pain and fever quickly became a fight for his life.

Throughout his treatment, Caison relied on the generosity of blood donors, receiving approximately 20 blood transfusions and 26 platelet transfusions. Each donation helped give him the strength to continue battling cancer.

Today, Caison is in the maintenance phase of treatment, and his family is giving back by hosting a community blood drive to help other patients facing serious illnesses.

"Before this happened, we didn't really understand how important blood donation was," his mom shared. "Now we know firsthand how much patients depend on those donations."

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, honor patients like Caison by helping ensure lifesaving blood is available when they need it most.

🩸 Schedule your appointment today at vitalant.org and learn more about the vital role platelets play for cancer patients at vitalant.org/platelets. (Use account code 100565317 to donate at the drive in honor of Caison.)
