This installment of Back to Basics covers something you might be hearing more about lately: budget reconciliation.

Reconciliation is a process that allows one party to circumvent the normal rules of the Senate to pass legislation on a simple majority basis – essentially 50 +1. Lawmakers use it outside the normal budget process to move major priorities forward on a party-line vote.

This has major impacts for working families, as lawmakers are increasingly reliant on this to push through their priorities, including major tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and slashing funding for health care.

Union workers make corporations more efficient and productive, and they promote stability and cut costly turnover.

Despite these benefits, employers still squander $1.7 billion a year on strong-arm tactics to try to keep workers from unionizing. As our Pride Month celebration continues, we’re pulling from the Solidarity Works Podcast archive.

In this episode, we talked with two activists from the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice about the life and legacy of the late labor and civil rights’ leader, who has often remained in the shadows of history. We also chat about their work with the LGBTQ+ community and how everyone can play a role in building a more inclusive, loving movement for all.

We’re getting back to basics today, talking about something all working people need to be aware of.

Jimmy O’Donnell, our union’s assistant legislative director, breaks down last year’s executive order that stripped federal workers of their collective bargaining rights – and why this matters for the entire labor movement, including the private sector.
