In 1965, Mexican American farmworkers growing grapes in Delano, California, participated in a strike for better pay, safer working conditions and the right to have a union.

Members of the National Farm Workers Association voted to join the walkout, putting thousands of Mexican American workers on the picket lines alongside Filipino farmworkers who started the strike.

Together, they refused to let growers divide them by race. The strike grew into a nationwide grape boycott that lasted for years and ultimately helped workers win union contracts with higher wages, health care and workplace protections.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're recognizing the Mexican American workers who stood together, fought for dignity on the job and helped change the labor movement.

Davion Johnson and other workers at Corning in Hemlock, Mich., felt the sting of America’s inequality crisis. They weren’t paid what they deserved or treated with respect. So they took matters into their own hands and joined a union, as more and more workers across the country are doing. New Gallup research shows that public appreciation for unions continues to rise, with many wanting labor to have greater influence in American life.

Enemy of Labor #11: Charles Schwab

In the early 1900s, Charles Schwab ran Bethlehem Steel and fought hard to keep his workers from organizing. In 1910, workers walked off the job over long hours, low wages and forced Sunday work. The strike grew to thousands of workers demanding better conditions and the right to have a voice at work.

Schwab refused to negotiate with the strikers or organized labor. Bethlehem Steel brought in Pennsylvania State Police, and a worker, Joseph Szambo, was killed when a trooper fired into a crowd. The 100-plus-day strike ultimately failed, but it helped expose the brutal working conditions steelworkers faced—and fueled the fight for stronger labor protections.
