An investigation into 3M’s payment practices by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has ended with the company being ordered to pay nearly $1 million in back wages to 1,700 employees.

Ellison’s office found that 3M made 5,978 involuntary deductions from the pay of 4,204 employees between May of 2020 and August of 2023.

As part of the settlement, 3M will issue payments to eligible employees equal to the total amount of overpayments the company recovered over an approximately three-year period.

Maplewood-based 3M reached a settlement with the Minnesota Attorney General's Office on Thursday.

Members of the USW 3M Council began their Jan. 25 meeting mapping out a strategy for combating the chemical company’s attempts to change the pension structure they believe may be coming given a recent announcement regarding nonunion workers.

3M announced in early January that it will freeze U.S. pension plans for nonunion employees, effective Dec. 31, 2028.

USW International Secretary-Treasurer John Shinn, who oversees bargaining in the chemical sector, said that the situation starkly illustrates the benefits of forming a union and collectively bargaining a contract, namely that that management cannot unilaterally alter or eliminate benefits for USW members.

“We expect that 3M will likely try making changes to our members’ pensions in future negotiations, and we are going to have to be organized and have a well-planned campaign,” said Shinn.

Union members who serve on the Dow DuPont North American Labor Council gathered in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on Oct. 9-12 for their annual meeting to discuss challenges in the sector as well as opportunities to improve health and safety.

The event was hosted by Local 6992, which represents 325 members at the DuPont Yerkes plant in Buffalo, N.Y., along with USW District 4.

The group was also joined by international allies from the United Kingdom, Argentina, and Turkey.

“This council has done a great job forming a global communications network so we can stay updated on what’s going on with the company at the international level,” said Kent Holsing, who serves as president of Local 12075 and chairs the Dow DuPont Council. “IndustriALL, in particular, has been a great asset over the years and we have members who serve on their board.”

Members of the USW attended the 2023 IndustriALL Global Conference of the Chemical and Pharmaceuticals Industries on Sept. 26-27 in Istanbul, Turkey.

There were more than 200 delegates from 40 different countries representing various unions in the chemical industry around the world. The conference was held at the headquarters of the Turkish chemical union Petrol-İş, one of two chemical unions in Turkey.
