The Blocks tried to break journalism in Pittsburgh, but union journalists and community members are uniting in response.
PAPER — the Pittsburgh Alliance for People-Empowered Reporting — aims to explore the possibility of a daily news publication for Pittsburgh that is rooted in the region’s history, accountable to people legacy media outlets too often ignore or harm, and shaped by the people who keep this city going and the people who report on it — not distant ownership.
Worker-owned or nonprofit models are on the table. So is a truly independent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
This group is focused on researching what is possible and responsible to build in this moment, then trying to make it happen with an emphasis on dignified work for local journalists, community engagement, media literacy, and a publication model that’s responsive to Pittsburgh as a diverse, changing city.
This work follows the Block family’s decision to close the Post-Gazette on May 3 after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to help them deny workers better, contractual health care.

Today, partners at the unionized Bloomfield Starbucks stood in solidarity with the workers and residents of Minnesota as ICE continues its occupation. We demand Starbucks to change their policies so workers can effectively protect their coworkers, customers and community members.

Pittsburgh! We’re coming to the end of a hot week; with some BIG news!
Union Starbucks baristas voted to authorize an open-ended unfair labor practice strike.
If Starbucks keeps union busting, Red Cup Day will turn into Red Cup Rebellion. Join us on November 13th for a Red Cup Rally and March through Oakland!

Hello Pittsburgh! Firstly; thank you for the turnout to our practice picket last Sunday! We had a great time; and thats why we have another! Come and join us again; or for the first time and show Starbucks where your dollar stands. We’ll be at the Penn Center East Shopping Plaza Starbucks from 1-2pm and we cant wait to see you there!

Join us tomorrow at the Forbes and Atwood Starbucks for another round of practice pickets! Yesterday, members began voting in a strike authorization vote. Join us on the picket as we continue to show Starbucks we’ll do whatever it takes for a contract!

Last Friday SBWU Pittsburgh held a community Q&A panel hosted by ! At this panel strike captains and baristas got to discuss the SBWU campaign and their personal experiences within their union. We’re very grateful for Karavansarai for hosting us, as well as grateful for all the food and monetary donations going straight into our strike food pantry.
Keep an eye out for more actions coming soon and thank you, we love you Pittsburgh!

Hi Pittsburgh! Were back, and this time we brought (real) chai! Friday October 17th, SBWU members will be holding a Q&A panel at Karavansarai Chai! We’ll be accepting food pantry donations for our strike food pantry as we gear up to do whatever it takes for a contract! DM us for the address and we’ll cya there!
