First Waves of Negley Run is a wrap! Students from the The Kingsley Association Teen Lead worked together to perform conservation projects from the mountain rivers of the Laurel Highlands to the Islands of Pittsburgh! They surfed, paddled, swam, and documented it all through the art of filmmaking! Huge thanks to all the amazing partners and sponsors that made this year’s initiative such a success.

The Islands of Oakmont and Native Mussel Expedition commences today as part of our First Waves of Negley Run programming. This workshop is made possible through partnership with and their groundbreaking Teen Lead initiatives. The First Waves Pittsburgh students are deploying to the Allegheny Islands via paddleboard for the Native Mussel and Documentary Filmmaking expedition made possible by the ! Students from the Greater Pgh region will become citizen scientists and documentary filmmakers while working alongside fisheries biologists to measure biodiversity and catalog mussels at this remarkable ecosystem just upstream of the famous 3 rivers. has been instrumental in growing the program to encompass these and myriad other groundbreaking youth programs and we are so grateful for their support!

For the first time ever, students from the Teen Lead program will heading to the mountain waters of the Laurel Highlands for a R iver SUP and Biodiversity expedition presented by ! The team just returned from a week on Pennsylvania’s Only Coast! First Waves Erie, the Great Lakes edition, was absolutely incredible. From beach cleanups along Presque Isle, paddleboard expeditions through the lagoon ecological preserve, maritime historical paddles and tours along Erie’s iconic Bayfront, and research at the all new Center for Lake Erie Education and Research - these students truly delivered on an incredible program. First Waves Erie continues today with the Great Lakes Ecology, Filmmaking and Maritime paddle event made possible by the ! Students will be analyzing the contents from their Presque Isle Beach Cleanup and water samples taken by paddleboard expedition in the lagoon waterway system at the all new Center for Lake Erie Education and Research. We are kicking off the First Waves Erie program today with the an exploration of the Presque Isle Lagoons presented by and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers. In this workshop, students will begin drawing water samples throughout the lagoons for analysis at the Center for Lake Erie Education snd Research later in the week! We will also be doing a beach cleanup and learning to document the adventure through the art of filmmaking. First Waves Alleghenies was INCREDIBLE this season! We were glad to meet youth from across Cambria and Somerset counties and work with them on a variety of waterway improvements and testing along the Stonycreek River while they documented their journeys! This project is part of the Laurel Highlands First Waves Series and made possible by the the Port of Pittsburgh Commission!

First Waves Pittsburgh launched this week with the River Surfing, Conservation, and the Art of Filmmaking Workshop presented by !

Students from the Greater Pittsburgh region traveled to the Laurel Highlands to explore biodiversity in the Stonycreek River, surf its standing waves, and document the experience through filmmaking.

We are grateful to Kate’s Real Food for helping keep everyone fueled and energized—especially during this week’s heat. It made a difference in getting the most out of our time on and around the water.
