One thing I started doing in the wildflower garden this season was putting up a few small signs so people can see what’s actually growing out here.

When you first walk by, it can just look like a bunch of flowers mixed together. But when you stop for a moment and see the names — the lupine, the poppies, the bluebells — you start to realize how many different plants are sharing the same little space in the yard.

Part of this project has always been about helping people slow down and notice what’s growing around them. Sometimes all it takes is a small sign in the garden to turn a quick walk past the flowers into something you actually stop and appreciate.

I walked outside and noticed one of those bright yellow desert flowers standing a little taller than the rest. And right on top of it was this tiny butterfly just sitting there like it owned the place.

What caught my attention was how the flower was leaning a bit, almost like it was stretching toward the sun, and the butterfly didn’t seem to mind at all. It just stayed there, wings closed, completely still, like it had found the perfect landing spot in the whole garden.

These little moments are happening all over the yard in the wildflower project. The flowers come up, the insects show up, and suddenly the whole place feels alive in ways you don’t notice unless you slow down and look closely.

I was out in the yard watching this poppy open up in the sun, and within seconds this bee came flying in like it had been tracking it all morning.

That’s the part I love about this project. You plant the seeds, you water, you wait and then one day the pollinators just show up. No announcement. They just know.

The poppies are glowing right now, and the bees are definitely taking advantage of it.

I was walking through the yard and saw this bee mid-flight, right next to the lupine, doing exactly what it’s supposed to be doing. No staging, no planning, just happened to be there at the right time.

It’s easy to forget how much is actually going on out here, but the pollinators always show up when the wildflowers do.

Wednesday morning, I woke up and looked outside, and the sky was glowing in orange and purple with purple really dominating in the sky so between the purple skies and the purple flowers there’s a lot of purple going on here, but this was the same Wednesday morning in the wildflower garden. By the way, if you’re looking for seems like this right now there’s a few places around Phoenix that you can see wildflowers so you don’t have to stalk me and find my house but if you have any questions about places to go, put a comment below, but I’ve heard Bartlett Lake is one area that has a good amount of poppies at the moment.

This is what I hope more people get to experience, a native Arizona garden that doesn’t just survive but thrives.

No fancy landscaping here. Just wildflowers doing their thing, with the light hitting just right. Every time I walk by, I’m reminded why the AZ Wildflower Project exists in the first place.

Bluebells growing straight out of rock, catching the last light. Easy to miss if you’re moving too fast. Desert wildflowers don’t last long, which is exactly why they’re worth stopping for.
