Do you live in Tucson? We're growing and would love to hear from you! Volunteers are the heart of our mission. Whether you mentor weekly, help at a one-day event, or lend a hand in our office, every hour you give creates moments of connection and creativity for children who have experienced trauma. You don’t need to be an artist—just someone who cares. With training, support, and a welcoming community, you’ll find that giving your time also enriches your own life. To begin the process of serving with Art Heals Arizona, you start by attending a Volunteer Info Session. This one-hour, virtual event provides details on Art Heals Arizona’s programming and how to support our diverse programming in a volunteer capacity. Theater Camp time! In 2001, Art Heals Arizona we partnered with the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix to create a program that would provide the opportunity for teens that Art Heals Arizona serves to practice theater skills, serving as an outlet to explore the stories from their lives that may be difficult to share.
Originally serving 20 teens and utilizing only two teaching artists, the program has now doubled in size and has reached, in total, nearly 500 teens who have been supported by over 5,000 audience members attending the final performances. With an upcoming performance in June.

What if everything we thought we knew about resilience was only part of the story?
In this new episode of Canvas of the Heart, host Matt Sandoval sits down with Dr. Sherry Hamby — distinguished research professor, clinical psychologist, and author of the forthcoming book Stronger Than You Think (May 26, 2026) — for a wide-ranging conversation about what it actually takes to heal from trauma and adversity.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stronger-than-you-think-an-interview-with-sherry-hamby/id1690842281?i=1000767405156
Dr. Hamby shares how her work in rural Appalachia, on the San Carlos Apache reservation, and with survivors of domestic violence taught her that the people our systems most often underestimate are frequently the ones working hardest to find a way forward. Drawing on decades of research, she walks us through the resilience portfolio model — a framework built around four domains of strength: meaning making, regulatory skills, interpersonal relationships, and physical environment — and explains why real healing rarely looks like toughing it out alone.
Together, Matt and Dr. Hamby explore the concept of poly-victimization (why cumulative trauma exposure matters more than any single event), why creative expression belongs at the center of trauma recovery rather than on its margins, and what “trauma-informed care” actually requires of organizations that claim it.
This conversation touches the heart of what Art Heals Arizona does every day — meeting people where they are, building on what they already bring, and trusting that a good life is possible.

Topics covered: portfolio model · Deficit lens vs. strengths-based approaches · -victimization and cumulative · Art, music, and creative expression as healing tools · Trauma-informed vs. healing-centered systems · Institutional betrayal · Access to healing outside formal services

Are you an educator? Someone who works with children? In medical school? Art Heals Arizona invites you to join the Resilient Hearts Symposium, bringing together members of the Art Heals Arizona community for a day full of comprehensive learning sessions, breakout sessions and expressive art techniques that will help develop a stronger understanding of mentoring, teaching, and the transformative power of the arts to help children heal from traumatic experiences.

Attendees will hear from nationally recognized leaders in child well-being programming, as well as staff and teaching artists directly involved with Art Heals Arizona who work with children receiving services from the organization every day.
Hear from Rick Griffin, speaker and founder of Neuro Leadership Academy,
"Resilience is not built in isolation. It is shaped moment by moment through the signals we send to one another. In this session, Rick Griffin brings neuroscience down to earth to show how resilience grows when people feel they belong, feel affirmed, and can rely on the steady presence of others. Grounded in how the brain predicts safety and threat, this presentation explores three simple but powerful signals we can send. When those signals are present, nervous systems settle; connection deepens, and resilience becomes contagious." MORE: https://na2.hubs.ly/H05jcGB0
