No one should be above the law — including federal agents. When government officials violate people’s rights, there must be a clear way to hold them accountable, just as any of us would be.

That’s why we were in D.C. last week for the ACLU’s third annual Community Safety Week. We’re urging members of Congress to pass legislation that will prevent discriminatory policing and restore accountability when federal law enforcement violates our rights.

Phoenix City Council will vote on Ordinance G-7514 tomorrow – the latest version of a troubling ordinance passed last year that severely restricts community groups from providing healthcare assistance to vulnerable community members in Phoenix parks.

What Karla experienced during her detention in Eloy is part of a systemic pattern of dehumanizing practices in ICE detention facilities —including inhumane conditions, medical neglect, and harassment. This is compounded by the Trump Administration's callous policy of refusing to recognize that trans people exist. We must demand an end to this unchecked cruelty.

Held for weeks in a men’s unit at Eloy, she was denied hormone therapy and other medical care before a judge ordered her release.
