🤔What makes people feel comfortable enough to share honestly?

At our recent DLA Education Committee session, Frank Velásquez Jr., Founder of 4 Da Hood LLC reminded us that meaningful conversations begin long before the discussion starts.

By creating space for emotion check-ins, shared agreements, and authentic connection, he showed how curiosity can build trust and belonging. These factors are all foundational to building a strong community.

SAVE THE DATE! Join us for our next DLA Coffee Chat on June 11. Time and location details coming soon.

Pride was never just a parade. It was a protest.

It was people showing up for one another when institutions wouldn't. It was community before acceptance was popular. It was courage before there were corporate logos and rainbow campaigns.

This Pride Month, we honor the activists, organizers, and everyday people who fought—and continue to fight—for dignity, safety, and belonging.

Pride isn't just about celebrating how far we've come. It's about asking how we show up for our communities today.

Support LGBTQ+ organizations. Advocate for equity. Protect vulnerable voices. Create spaces where everyone can thrive.

Because Pride has always been about community.

And community needs all of us.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation wishing you had asked a different question?

One of the most impactful lessons from our recent DLA Education Committee session was the ORID framework, a simple way to guide conversations that helps people feel heard, understood, and valued.

Instead of jumping straight to solutions, ORID encourages us to slow down and explore:
🔍 What happened?
🔍 How did it feel?
🔍 What does it mean?
🔍 What should happen next?

The truth is, meaningful conversations start with curiosity. When we take the time to ask thoughtful questions, we create space for connection, learning, and growth.

If you're looking for a space to continue these conversations, mark your calendar for our next DLA Coffee Chat on June 11. More details on time and location will be shared soon.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Originally established after the Civil War, Memorial Day began as a time for communities to come together, decorate the graves of fallen soldiers, and ensure their sacrifices would never be forgotten. Today, it remains a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the responsibility we share to care for one another.

At Diversity Leadership Alliance, we believe strong communities are built when people come together across differences, listen to one another's stories, and create spaces where everyone feels they belong.

As we gather with family and friends, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on those who served, those we have lost, and the role each of us can play in building a more connected, compassionate, and inclusive community.

We remember. We honor. We continue the work of building community together.

What does it mean to lead with curiosity, connection, and care?

At our recent DLA Education Committee session, community members came together for meaningful conversations about leadership, belonging, and building stronger relationships through intentional dialogue.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing key takeaways, reflection prompts, and insights from facilitator Frank Velásquez Jr., Founder of 4 Da Hood LLC to help continue the conversation beyond the room.

Whether you're looking to grow as a leader, expand your network, or engage in thoughtful discussions about diversity, equity, inclusion, and community, DLA's Coffee Chats create space for learning, reflection, and connection.

📅 Save the date! Our next Coffee Chat will take place on June 11. Time and location details will be announced soon, but you can expect another opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and practice these ideas together.

☕ What is one question you've asked recently that helped you better understand someone else's perspective?

05/19/2026

We asked the community to answer what belonging means to them and they didn’t disappoint. 💬

What came back was honest, powerful, and deeply human.

Belonging means being seen.
Being heard.
Feeling safe enough to show up as your full self.
Knowing your voice matters.

These reflections remind us that belonging isn’t just a buzzword. It’s the foundation of thriving teams, stronger workplaces, and meaningful connection.

Support doesn’t have to be big to matter.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded that simply showing up for one another in difficult moments can make a real difference. A check-in, a conversation, or taking the time to listen without judgment can help someone feel seen, heard, and less alone.

In our workplaces, schools, and communities, small acts of care help build a culture where people feel supported and valued. You never know the impact you can have on just one person but it can be life-changing.

This month, and every month, let’s choose to show up for each other. It matters more than we realize.

What does Cinco de Mayo really mean? 🧐

Observed on May 5, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It’s a powerful symbol of resilience, resistance, and the strength of a community standing together against the odds.

Here in Arizona, where Hispanic and Latino communities are deeply rooted in our history and culture, Cinco de Mayo is more than a date—it’s a reminder of heritage, pride, and the ongoing contributions that shape our neighborhoods every day.

It’s also a moment to reflect on the importance of protecting and supporting our communities.

Access to accurate information and resources is essential. That’s why we encourage everyone to visit KnowYourRights.az.gov to learn about your rights, available protections, and how to stay safe and informed.

Celebration is important—but so is empowerment.

Let’s honor the history, uplift our communities, and ensure everyone has the tools they need to thrive.
