Two hundred fifty years ago, America declared its independence. Today, young people are declaring something too.
That freedom isn’t finished.
It’s something every generation has to define, defend, and expand.

Freedom looks like speaking your truth.
Freedom looks like creating art that challenges.
Freedom looks like organizing your community.
Freedom looks like showing up for your neighbors.
Freedom looks like casting a ballot because your voice belongs in the future.

Sixty-two years after young people risked everything during Freedom Summer to fight for the freedom to vote, this generation is carrying that work forward in its own way. Through creativity, courage, and community.

This Fourth of July, we’re celebrating the young people who are asking not just what America is—but what it can become.

At Hear & Now, young Philadelphians reminded us that their voices matter, and that our democracy is stronger when those voices are heard.

Your story belongs in the conversation. Your voice belongs in the community. And when it’s time, your vote belongs at the ballot box.

Stories have the power to challenge assumptions, spark conversation, and shape the future.

At Hear & Now, Maroua Benfadhla of Philadelphia Young Playwrights reminded us that young people need more than a ballot to make an impact, they need a platform. Through poetry and performance, Maroua gave voice to the questions, hopes, and realities that deserve to be heard.

At Philadelphia Young Playwrights, students are encouraged to ask big questions about the future of their city and tell stories that reflect their lived experiences. Because when young people are trusted to tell their own stories, they don’t just imagine change, they inspire it.

Thank you, Maroua, for sharing your voice with us and reminding us why creating space for youth expression is an essential part of civic engagement.

Music doesn’t just reflect the world, it can help change it.

At Hear & Now, the AMLA Anti-Violence Youth Rock Band took the stage with a message that reached far beyond the music. Through original songs centered on peace, community, and social justice, these young artists reminded us that creative expression is a powerful form of civic engagement.

Thank you to the incredible musicians from AMLA for sharing your voices, your talent, and your vision with us. This is exactly what Hear & Now was created to celebrate.
