Congratulations to the University of Maryland Smith School of Business Net Impact Chapter for hosting their annual Smith Social Impact Career Day! A special thank you to our Board Member Beth Spurgeon, who served as a panelist, along with the other incredible social impact leaders, including Meagan Breidert of Slalom Consulting, Vineeta Gupta, MD, JD, LLM, an award-winning human rights lawyer, physician, and social impact leader, and Barbara Gao Shapiro of Blueprint to Great Schools. Joshua Filer’s “why” is simple and ambitious: build the world you want to see instead of waiting for someone else to build it.

He started with Net Impact at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, helping bring a dormant chapter back to life. That experience helped shape his path toward building an impactful career and an impactful life. Today, he leads in the professional community as President of Net Impact Philadelphia, where the chapter’s Board Fellows Program has placed 25+ professionals on nonprofit boards over the past three years, and events have brought together hundreds of people for conversations on everything from B Corps to climate anxiety.

Now Joshua’s focused on what comes next: a more direct way to connect with the broader Net Impact community and bring more opportunities back to his chapter.

February chapter highlights, in three scenes:

1️⃣ University of Minnesota (Undergrad) gathered to make cards for children and young adults in hospitals, a simple way to show up with care and encouragement.
2️⃣ University of Cincinnati (Hybrid) hosted a hands-on event on sustainable gift giving, creating handmade gifts and cards with intention.
3️⃣ University of Alberta (Graduate) and Net Impact Edmonton (Professional) came together for an Economics & Sustainability: Finding Common Ground fireside chat, making space for the conversations that move ideas into action.

Net Impact CEO Karen Johns recently joined the AI for Nonprofits Network to share how our organization approached launching AI tools to support our global community.

Instead of chasing technology trends, the focus was simple: start with the problem, identify where staff time is being drained, and find tools that help teams focus more on mission-driven work.

Karen shared how this practical approach helped Net Impact launch new platforms and tools in just 90 days — showing how AI can act as a force multiplier for nonprofits working with limited resources.

Net Impact — January chapter highlights

January was a strong reminder that impact happens locally, and it happens fast.

A few chapter moments we loved:

• Net Impact Philadelphia kicked off an expanded Board Fellows program, helping make board service more approachable and more useful for fellows and host organizations.
• Net Impact NYU hosted Mentorship Speed Dating to connect students with mentors and practical guidance.
• Central Texas College brought the energy with a student mixer, showing up with smiles and a little fundraising hustle.
• Net Impact UW Undergraduate teamed up with AIESEC for a clean energy session on real-world technologies, capped off with Jeopardy and prizes.
