Join California Walks, Butte County’s Department of Public Health, the City of Los Banos, and the Fresno County Department of Public Health to hear about what worked and didn’t for their temporary traffic safety demonstrations and how you can implement your own demonstrations. The three statewide case studies will highlight outcomes and considerations for pop-up safety demos in rural and suburban communities, focusing on robust community engagement.

In 2022, the Active Transportation Resource Center (ATRC) partnered with S**G to expand the reach of S**G’s traffic safety materials. ATRC hired California Walks to implement its Go Human Kit of Parts Pilot Program, utilizing the lending library of pop-up materials to temporarily demonstrate potential and planned street design treatments and safety infrastructure to create safer and more inviting public spaces.

This year was filled with new connections and continued partnerships across California. We’re grateful for each of the 31 communities we co-operated and co-created in 2022. Our mission is always to co-empower communities to make California safer for walking and biking. Some 2022 highlights:

🚲The Comunidades Activas y Seguras Program created 3 new Radionovelas!

🚲Paradise, Los Banos, and Fresno hosted 3 temporary demonstrations!

🚲Local champions in Stanislaus County completed a variety of community engagement projects!

We also want to extend a big thank you to our Board President Joe Martinez for his 4 years of service to the organization. We know that all Californians can count on continuing to have a dedicated ally and champion in this important work!

Please consider supporting our goal to raise $10K to support in-person community planning in 2023. Every donation helps us provide essential in-person support like childcare and interpretation.

Happy Holidays!

Cal Walks and the Active Transportation Resource Center (ATRC) teamed up to host a Kit of Parts Pilot Project! The project uses the Southern California Association of Government's (S**G) Go Human Kit of Parts to host a variety of different temporary demonstrations all throughout the state.

We partnered up with the City of Los Banos, Los Banos Downtown Business Association, Mark Thomas, and Placeworks to host a temporary Parklet on 6th St. & a Curb Extension on I St./6th St. in Downtown Los Banos!

Throughout the day, we shared draft concepts of the forthcoming Downtown Los Banos Master Plan and gathered over 100 surveys on the proposed safety improvements. We look forward to reviewing the survey results and continuing our partnership to make Downtown Los Banos a safer place to walk and bike!

Along with UC BerkeleySafeTREC, we completed our 2nd cohort of the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (Active & Safe Streets) program!

This year we worked with 3 Spanish-speaking communities to improve local walking and biking safety: the City of Bell, Boyle Heights, and Oxnard. We also completed a number of community planning resources such as our Loteria game: Sistemas Seguros and our Spanish Glossary: Diccionario de la Calle. Click the link in our bio to learn more about these 3 sites and to view our community planning resources in English and Spanish.

It's Giving Season! This year, we're asking you to help us raise $10K to support in-person community planning events in 2023! Link in bio to learn more about how you can support communities across the state by donating!
