The students at The East Bay School watched The Mask You Live In.

And then they sat in a circle and talked about what they actually saw.

Not what they were supposed to say.

What they actually saw.

A student said it was alarming. Young men their age doing drugs. Young men their age killing people.

A girl in the room spoke up about her cousin. Concerned about bullied. Being dismissed. Struggling with his mental health alone.

This is what this generation is carrying.

Not someday. Right now.

The Adventure Card Game doesn't ask easy questions.

At The Branson School, Ashanti Branch put the cards on the table and the young men answered honestly.

One talked about the phone call he got when his brother broke his arm. The panic. The not knowing. How fast fear moves through your body before you even think.

One talked about procrastination. Not as a joke. As something he's actually trying to fight. A habit he named out loud because naming it is the first step to changing it.

One talked about the moment he realized he was becoming an adult.

It wasn't a birthday. It wasn't a milestone.

It was the day someone insulted him and he didn't insult them back.

Not for the perfect version of fatherhood the world puts on a pedestal once a year.

The man who showed up tired. Who tried with the tools he had. Who carried his own pain quietly so his son wouldn't have to see it. Who didn't always know the right words but never stopped looking for them.

Behind so many young men who are still standing, there is a man like you.

In the middle of a school hallway he told his mom he loved her.

At The East Bay School, Ashanti shared what it was like growing up without his father.

He described missing moments that many take for granted.

Sports games.
Parent conferences.
Simple public moments where you notice another child beside their dad.

Absence shapes identity.

For many young men today, fatherlessness is not an abstract concept. It is lived reality.

While no program replaces a parent, intentional mentorship and structured brotherhood can provide guidance and stability.

Community involvement becomes critical when family structure is strained or absent.

Young men need consistent examples of maturity, accountability, and care.

That is why these conversations extend beyond a single workshop.
