Tuesday was our first full conference day, and we had a blast! We opened up with a plenary about Chicago Solidarity on the Frontlines, enjoyed a lunch plenary about The State of AANHPI Philanthropy in 2025, and immersed ourselves in local culture and heritage with site visits to Chinatown and the National Cambodian Heritage Museum.

We closed off the day by recognizing and bestowing awards to two outstanding individuals within the AANHPI community who have advanced the field of philanthropy to be more inclusive and just.

Lori Villarosa was awarded the Urvashi Vaid Intersectional Leadership Award for over three decades of deep-rooted commitment to intersectional organizing and transformative social change that has shaped and strengthened the field of racial justice philanthropy.

We were honored to recognize Unmi Song, whose impact has shaped and strengthened the local, as well as national, philanthropic landscape, as the recipient of the Local Champion Award in Chicago.

Congratulations, Lori and Unmi, on your well-deserved recognitions!

Throughout Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Give in May Campaign will drive support to nonprofit organizations serving the vast and diverse AA and NHPI communities.

Through the immense challenges of the past few years, we have seen that our communities are stronger together. But the work is never done and supporting AANHPI-serving nonprofits is as important as ever.

Given that just 0.20% of philanthropic dollars are designated to AA and NHPI communities, we ask that you consider donating personally as well as professionally to the critical organizations serving our communities. Celebrate with us and consider supporting our work by donating today via the link in our bio! 🔗

Join us for a powerful conversation featuring artists, cultural workers, organizers, and activists who are building at the intersections of social justice movements.

Moderated by Akemi Kochiyama (she/her) — granddaughter of human rights icon Yuri Kochiyama and co-director of The Yuri Kochiyama Solidarity Project — this plenary session brings together a dynamic group of leaders.

Together, they’ll explore cross-racial and cross-movement solidarity efforts and share creative ideas for resourcing social justice work across communities.

This session is deeply rooted in legacy — inspired by Malcolm X, Yuri Kochiyama, and Stacey Park Milbern, who all share a birthday on May 19, the day our conference opens.

Don’t miss this moment!

In the face of an onslaught of executive actions aimed at dismantling core civil rights and DEIA efforts, this is the time for philanthropy to be brave, steadfast, and resilient. Join us for the last session of AAPIP’s three-part Learning Series: Protecting Race-Explicit Programming, where we will share the work of the Racial Equity Advancement and Defense Initiative (READI), a collaborative led by ABFE, AAPIP, HIP, and NAP to promote, expand, and defend race-explicit grantmaking.

We will engage in a conversation about how we can meet this moment, including leveraging our collective power to protect race-conscious programs, sharing resources to help organizations right-size their legal risk, and raising awareness about the dangers of shying away from strategies that seek to address systemic racism.

RSVP at the link in our bio to learn how we can transform personal convictions into tangible actions to support an infrastructure within philanthropy and beyond. 🔗

We’d like to extend a big thank you to Curtis Chin for discussing his new memoir “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant” and helping cultivate an engaging and thoughtful conversation about identity, belonging, and community preservation at last night’s Detroit Community Gathering co-sponsored by Asian Pacific Fund.

“Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant” describes Curtis’ experiences growing up in Detroit in the 1980s and coming out to his working class immigrant family, all against the political backdrop of the Reagan era, the Vincent Chin murder, and his family’s popular Chinese restaurant.

Our ownership of our political identity as AANHPI peoples is an intentional act of solidarity to build power across communities of color and the vast AANHPI diasporas, which encompasses Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities - including Palestinians.

In the past year, more than 40,000 Palestinians have lost their lives and over 2.3 million Palestinians have been displaced. For decades, countless lives in the Middle East have been deeply impacted by discrimination, dispossession, and violence. With the October 7th attack, taking of hostages, and heartbreaking devastation in Gaza, the philanthropic sector has struggled with how to respond - especially when it comes to supporting Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim communities.

AAPIP invites grantmakers and funders to participate in a series of collective learning spaces developed in partnership with Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropic leaders.

This funder briefing, sponsored by AAPIP and 18 Million Rising, centers Palestinian-led and Muslim-led nonprofit organizations whose work is critical to protecting and advocating for Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim communities here in the U.S. and abroad.
