For nine months, 14 seventh graders at Westlake Middle School met weekly with teaching artists from Chapter 510 & the Dept. of Make / Believe — pairing creative writing with hands-on book arts to turn memoir and poetry into their own hand-made zines. Their work honored six different home languages represented in the classroom, and the year closed with students reading their finalized projects aloud.

This partnership was made possible through PVF's Visiting Artist in the Classroom Resource Grant Program.

This year also marks Chapter 510's 10th anniversary — a decade of connecting over 6,500 young people in Oakland to the power of their stories, and publishing more than 100 youth-penned books.

PVF is proud to help support schools and programs that create space for young people to learn and express themselves.

Six Mayfair High School seniors. Six different sports. One shared commitment to showing up, working hard, and lifting up the people around them.

This year's Childress Family Foundation Scholarship recipients — Kennedy Dimmy, Spencer Cummins, Daleyna Le, David Perez, Kendyl Gutierrez, and Miles Mitchell — are headed to schools across the country to study everything from nursing to cybersecurity to investigative journalism. Founder Josh Childress created this scholarship to help student athletes "continue to strive for excellence on and off the court or field," and this class embodies exactly that.

"To the tutors working tirelessly with us, thank you for giving us your time."

That's a 2026 graduate of Next Step Learning Center, speaking at a ceremony that sent 100+ students across the stage this month.

For over 30 years, Next Step has given Oakland youth and adults free access to education — a place to earn a diploma or GED, build job skills, and find real support along the way. Many graduates call it a second home.

This month, we celebrated a true PVF legend: Albert J. Horn, our founding Board Chair, is turning 100. From serving in the U.S. Army during WWII to five decades as one of the Bay Area's most respected estate planning attorneys, Al has spent a lifetime showing up for others. San Mateo County Supervisor Jackie Speier honored him last month, and the tributes from our team say it best: "PVF's DNA is Al Horn personified."
