The Alcove - already brightening up the Circle!

Reporting By Gracie Kirschner of

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — For many students with disabilities, high school graduation also comes with a sometimes-dreaded question: what comes next?

The loss of school-based services, often referred to as the “disability cliff,” can leave families searching for support. A new collaborative space in Park Circle aims to soften that drop-off and replace it with opportunity.

The Alcove, a newly opened shared space in Park Circle, is home to five nonprofits serving adults with disabilities, including HEART Inclusive Arts Community, Building Independence Together, Be the Change Charleston and other programs focused on employment and life enrichment. Together, they provide creative, social and support services long after the school bell stops ringing.

“This place feels like home,” Sara Sirmons said.

Sirmons said HEART has given her more than just a place to create art.

“I got a lot of really good friends and good people, good teachers and awesome mentors,” she said.

She said the community has helped her through difficult moments in her life.

“I’ve been through a lot in my life but coming here helps,” Sirmons said. “It helps me be cool, be great, be awesome, be brave.”

I live in Asheville, North Carolina."
