Who will pay to preserve tropical forests?

In a recent op-ed for Project Syndicate, Carlos Nobre, Co-Chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon, and Lee White, Special Envoy to the Science Panel for the Congo Basin, examine how the Tropical Forest Forever Facility could help reshape the economic incentives for tropical forest conservation.

For decades, the international community has recognized the extraordinary value of tropical forests while failing to invest adequately in their protection. Launched at last year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), the Tropical Forest Forever Facility could help close this financing gap and establish a more sustainable model for preserving these vital ecosystems.

In September, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) released the 2026 Networks in Action (NiA) report, showcasing the work of our 60 national and regional networks to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Here are some highlights from the SDSN Networks in the Americas:
🔷 UN SDSN Andes published 33,400+ records from 6,800+ species in a biodiversity database for the Mira-Mataje Binational Basins.
🔷 SDSN Bolivia won both inaugural MapBiomas Bolivia awards, highlighting excellence and innovation in spatial data use.
🔷 SDSN Canada hosted 194 events across 31 institutions, gathering 2,000+ attendees during SDG Month Canada 2026.
🔷 SDSN Chile’s Just Transition Observatory and Design Unit was selected as one of the most inspiring and impactful cases in the SDSN’s Just Transition Mapping initiative.
🔷 SDSN México hosted a workshop with SEMARNAT, bringing together 19 local national universities to contribute to Mexico's NDC.

Here are some highlights from the SDSN Networks in Africa:
🔷 SDSN Ghana delivered diagnostic services to 3,000+ people across underserved communities, improving early detection and response.
🔷 SDSN Great Lakes mobilized 20,000+ youth and improved the living conditions and social cohesion of 100 vulnerable families.
🔷 SDSN-Kenya improved evidence-based land-use planning, integrated climate policies, and generated land-use detection maps.
