Thank you to all who attended “Startups in Focus: AI Powering the Way We Live,” supported exclusively by Hanwha Life, on Thursday, May 21! 🤖

This year's forum brought together founders, investors, and technology leaders to examine how startups transform our lives with AI without losing what makes us human.

Following opening remarks by Michael Burke (Head of International Network Management, Citi's Banking & International Organization), Dr. Abraham Kim (President and CEO, The Korea Society), Dr. Jinwoo Hwang (Senior Executive Vice President, Hanwha Life), and Sangho Kim (Consul General, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York), the forum opened with visionary VC Steve Jang (Kindred Ventures) and highlighted how startups — Synchron, Story Protocol, Nitra, Sandbar, and Saywise — are transforming the way we live, and how we can harness that transformation without losing our humanity. The day unfolded across five panel sessions and fireside chats featuring experts across various fields:

⭐️🎙️:
Steve Jang, Founder and Managing Partner of Kindred Ventures
Dr. Min Kyung Lee (Assistant Professor; UT Austin School of Information)
Peter Yoo (Senior Director, Neuroscience & Algorithms; Synchron)
Tim Hwang (Co-Founder and CEO, Nitra)
Dorothy Chang (Venture Partner, Fybridge)
SY Lee (CEO and Co-Founder, Story Protocol)
David Park (Managing Partner, Warren Equity Partners, Founding Member, Digital Storytelling Lab of Columbia University)
Hyunsun Ahn ( on IG)
Taeyong Kim (CEO, EO)
Ryan Cheah (Founder, The 21st)
Sho Young Shin (Director of Platform, ERA)
Chang (CK) Kim (Founder & CEO, Saywise)
Kirak Hong (Co-founder and CTO, Sandbar)

We hope our guests enjoyed networking opportunities throughout the forum and during the reception, leaving with inspiration and connectedness within the Korea-U.S. startup community.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the UNESCO designation commemorating the 150th anniversary of Kim Koo’s birth last Thursday at The Korea Society.

We would like to give a special thank-you to the Association of Commemorative Service for Patriot Kim Koo and the Kim Koo Foundation for preparing a presentation delivered by Dr. Han Kyung-Koo, who served as the Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO and played a pivotal role in the 2026 UNESCO designation.

Dr. Han’s presentation explored the deep and intricate life, vision, and legacy of Kim Koo, shedding light on the why and how behind the pursuit of the landmark UNESCO designation.

As President of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Kim Koo led the Korean independence movement and understood the importance of international solidarity better than anyone. In his essay "My Wish," included in his 1947 autobiography Paikbum Ilji (백범일지), he emphasized moving past hatred to build a nation where everyone enjoys happiness through cultural development, thereby contributing to world peace. His vision — that humanity can only prosper together when each nation develops its unique culture and engages in mutual exchange — is strikingly consistent with UNESCO’s cultural philosophy today.

Obtaining the UNESCO designation was a culmination of tremendous effort and meticulous attention to various unforeseen circumstances. Ultimately, it is a meaningful declaration that the universal values that Kim Koo represents remain vital in our modern era.

Our members and friends gathered last Thursday for the opening of “Kim Koo: Dreaming of Peace Through the Power of Culture,” a special exhibition commemorating UNESCO’s designation of 2026 as the 150th anniversary of Kim Koo’s birth.

🎙️ Ahead of the presentation and gallery opening, we were honored to receive congratulatory remarks from a handful of distinguished guests:

Her Excellency Kang Kyung-wha, who was appointed ROK Ambassador to the U.S. by President Lee Jae Myung in October 2025, delivered touching remarks underscoring how Kim Koo’s lifelong commitment to Korean independence, peace, and cultural fulfillment is reflected in Korea’s recognition as a model for socioeconomic progress and global cultural influence today.

A heartfelt congratulatory message from Dr. Kim Mee, Chairperson of the Kim Koo Foundation, was relayed by her daughter and great granddaughter of Kim Koo, Ms. Jung Hwa Kim, Director of International Affairs for The Kim Koo Foundation. Dr. Kim’s words echoed the theme of the exhibition, emphasizing how her grandfather’s legacy speaks to universal values of peace, culture, and coexistence.

In her poignant message, New Jersey Assemblywoman Ellen Park highlighted the ways in which Kim Koo’s enduring vision continues to resonate throughout Korea and beyond. She invited guests to learn from Kim Koo’s fearless leadership and how his commitment to unity, resilience, cultural pride, and our future generations can be applied to our world today.

Korea Society Board Chair, Ambassador (ret) Kathleen Stephens, shared fond memories of her introduction to Dr. Kim Mee prior to her time serving as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2008-2011). She also emphasized the significance of Kim Koo’s iconic calligraphy, reading “Korea-U.S.: Friendship, Equality, and Cooperation,” which is displayed in the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Seoul, and as a replica at the Old Korean Legation House in Washington, D.C..

Thank you to those who could join us for this meaningful evening honoring the life and legacy of Kim Koo. ICYMI, watch the replay now on our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/cprSgW62jCU?si=KLXMM3eXRh6uSv89
