A few days ago, President Obama declared January Human Trafficking and Slavery Awareness month. As we gear up to continue to build our movement for dignity, respect, and labor protections for domestic workers in 2013, lets also reflect on the ways in which domestic workers are still a dehumanized and disempowered workforce.

After denying strangling the 4-month-old babyshe cared for in 2005, and appeal after appeal by the Sri Lankan government, Rizana Nafeek was executed today in Saudi Arabia despite global appeals to call it off because she was only 17 at the time of the alleged crime.
Rizana's death sentence--a violation of international codes governing the rights of minors--highlights the ways in which domestic workers continue to be denied basic rights. Rizana had no access to legal representation before her conviction.
Domestic workers urgently need greater protections! An ILO report estimates that only about 10% of all domestic workers - about 5.3 million people - are covered by labour laws to the same degree as other workers. Sad, sad, news.

Saudi Arabia has executed a Sri Lankan domestic worker for killing a baby in her care in 2005, a foreign ministry official in Colombo tells the BBC.
