💚 Thank you to everyone who has supported the EEG (Electroencephalogram) initiative so far.

Because of your generosity, we are nearly halfway to our $60,000 goal of bringing EEG diagnostics to Kigutu Hospital. Every contribution is helping move us closer to a future where children and families can access life-changing epilepsy diagnosis and care locally.

Thanks to the generosity of the Village Health Works board, the next $5,000 in donations will be matched dollar for dollar. There is still more work to do, and every donation continues to make a difference. Join us and double your inpact today!

KIA Boys Basketball Team – National Inter-School Tournament Finalists 🏀

Congratulations to the KIA Boys Basketball Team for finishing 2nd in the National Inter-School Tournament after a hard-fought final against VAB (Various Academy of Bujumbura).

The final took place this past Sunday in Gitega, where both teams delivered an intense and competitive game. As runners-up, the team was awarded three basketballs as a prize.

The KIA team performed strongly throughout the tournament, demonstrating determination, discipline, and teamwork at every step.

Whether a team finishes first, last, or anywhere in between, sports help build the skills students need for life both on and off the court. Proud of our students for representing KIA with heart, resilience, and sportspersonship. 🏀

For patients like Amandine, access to diagnosis can change everything. 💚

Without proper testing, treatment becomes uncertain and outcomes worsen. An EEG machine at Kigutu Hospital will help clinicians diagnose and treat epilepsy locally and effectively.

⭐ Staff Spotlight ⭐
Meet Adolphe NTABUNDA, Midwife at Village Health Works!

Since joining VHW in June 2023, Adolphe has dedicated his work to supporting mothers and newborns with compassion, skill, and commitment. Driven by a passion for protecting life, he found in VHW a mission that closely aligns with his calling to serve the community.

For Adolphe, one of the most rewarding moments is witnessing the safe arrival of a healthy newborn. As he beautifully shares: “A midwife’s victory is the victorious cry of a little being who has just crossed the border into the world.”

Through his work in maternal health, Adolphe contributes to reducing preventable maternal and infant deaths while helping ensure healthier outcomes for families in the community. He also values the strong spirit of teamwork at VHW and continues to strengthen his professional skills through collaboration and advanced patient monitoring practices.

Through dedicated professionals like Adolphe, VHW continues working toward a healthier community with safer births, healthier newborns, and a stronger future for families.

Did you know Village Health Works has an array of mental health services offered in Kigutu? We are advancing holistic mental health care through community empowerment.

Last month, 18 pigs were distributed to small groups of patients living with epilepsy and psychiatric conditions. Each household received one pig, and an additional pig was shared per group to be collectively raised as a future social fund.

This initiative supports both mental health care and sustainable livelihoods, while strengthening social bonds and reducing stigma.

By combining clinical care with community-based agriculture, the holistic model is being put into practice to support long-term well-being and resilience.

Premature Baby Success Story as we are on our way to opening the Neonatal ICU this summer!

A female infant born at 28 weeks’ gestation, weighing 890g, was treated with equipment we have purchased as we gear up to open our NICU. The child and team faced extreme prematurity, respiratory distress, and hypothermia.

She received comprehensive specialized care including respiratory support, infection management, nutritional support, and Kangaroo Mother Care. Her condition improved steadily under close multidisciplinary monitoring.

After 7 weeks, she was discharged in stable condition at 1,800g. At follow-up, she was thriving at 2,245g.

This outcome reflects the impact of timely, high-quality neonatal care and the dedication of the clinical team in improving newborn survival. 💚

Village Health Works is working to bring an EEG machine to Kigutu Hospital to support children living with epilepsy.

Today, more than 1,000 patients rely on care but diagnosis remains out of reach for many.

Thanks to VHW’s board, we have $11,000 in matching funds available. So far $2,000 has been given towards the match resulting in $4,000 towards the EEG. Join us in unlocking these dollars by donating today!

Every gift will be matched dollar for dollar. 💚
