🏺The Iraqi maqām: A musical tradition worth preserving.

UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity includes performing arts that have contributed to a nation's cultural identity and history. Bibliolore's most recent post--the first in a series that features musical practices inscribed in UNESCO's list--provides an annotated bibliography on the Iraqi maqām. May its content serve to document and build awareness of this important element of Iraqi cultural heritage currently at risk of fading away.

MGG Online celebrates International Jazz Day 2026 🎺

Fifteen years ago, in 2011, UNESCO officially designated 30 April as International Jazz Day. This global initiative brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts to celebrate the art form while promoting intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.

MGG Online offers a rich and expansive resource for learning about this international genre. At the core is its landmark 2021 entry on jazz, which explores key terminology, traces its precursors, and surveys early styles—from New Orleans style to swing—as well as modern developments from bebop onward. MGG Online also covers the history of jazz reception and the academic discipline of jazz studies—alongside offering a wide range of geographical and biographical entries.

Because some posts were too fun to write to let drift away forever...🔂

We've decided to revive some of our older posts originally published by our partners EBSCO on their blog, EBSCOpost. First up is one about helicopters by Jim Cowdery, the subject of our first RILMinisences Bibliolore series and the one responsible for so many great posts during his time at RILM.

Many thanks to Jim and EBSCO, and happy reading!

Knowing which information is trustworthy isn't always easy. But knowing where to find trustworthy information is.

As a fully-networked, continuously updated Italian knowledge base with a distinctly global perspective on music, DEUMM Online is not your everyday digital encyclopedia.

Continuing to celebrate 60 years of RILM, Biblilore takes a moment to focus on one of RILM's newest products, and the one that made RILM a content provider. DEUMM Online expands and updates Alberto Basso’s Dizionario enciclopedico universale della musica e dei musicisti, providing a research experience that draws from the knowledge of specialists worldwide.

2026: a year we can celebrate two anniversaries at once. 🎉

Of course, RILM has just turned 60, but this year we also celebrate ten years of providing a digital platform for the world's most trusted digital encyclopedia for music and music-related scholarship. Hosting MGG Online on Egret for the last decade has been an incredible experience, one made better by having such tenacious and knowledgeable partners in Bärenreiter-Verlag and J.B. Metzler.

Here's to all we've accomplished together to make such important content accessible to a global audience. We can't wait to see what's in store for the decades to come as we raise the authoritative standards for a digital encyclopedia.

Revisiting old friends, colleagues, and times reminds us of how far we've come over the last 60 years.

Bibliolore opens its series sharing the recollections of long-time RILM staff members with former editor Jim Cowdery. Arriving at RILM in the so-called "class of '98"—the only time in RILM's history when five editors were hired simultaneously—Jim brought expertise in topics surrounding ethnomusicology (among other disciplines), a keen editorial eye (which he applied to earlier editions of RILM's How to write about music), and an incredibly warm heart.

It's hard to imagine where we would be without Jim, and he has been greatly missed in the time since his retirement. We continue to benefit from his tenure and send endless thanks for all he's done.
