Today, we honor and thank longtime iEARN educator member and project facilitator Mari Sekine from Japan as she retires from teaching and her facilitator role with iEARN.

Mari has brought so much care, passion, and dedication to the Girl Rising Project, helping students around the world explore the importance of quality education for every girl. Through iEARN, she connected classrooms across borders and helped create meaningful global learning experiences that students and teachers will carry with them for years to come.

Mari shared that iEARN gave her the opportunity to deepen her teaching and connect her students with students around the world — a beautiful reflection of the impact she has had on this community.

Thank you, Mari, for your years of service, leadership, and heart. You will be missed!

What does it mean to teach with a global perspective?

Recently, iEARN-USA’s Manager of Membership Services, Nicole, spoke with two students from the University of Akron School of Education’s Global Education and Technology course, taught by iEARN-USA Advisory Board Member Dr. I-Chun Tsai.

Their conversation explored the power of virtual exchange, the role of technology in connecting classrooms, and how iEARN projects help bring learning content to life through meaningful collaboration with students and teachers around the world.

They also discussed how global education can open students’ eyes to new perspectives and help prepare future teachers to create more connected, inclusive, and globally minded classrooms.

On Exchange Day, we celebrate the many ways global learning brings people together—across borders, cultures, and classrooms.

This summer, iEARN-USA’s NSLI-Y students in South Korea and Taiwan immersed themselves in Korean and Mandarin while living and learning in their host communities. From traditional arts and local foods to historic sites and everyday conversations, each experience offered a new way to understand the world.

That same spirit of connection is also shaping iEARN-USA’s growing virtual exchange opportunities for K–12 students. Through programs such as Meet the World and Meet a Changemaker, classrooms can connect with international peers and inspiring young leaders, making meaningful global learning accessible to even more students.

As iEARN-USA continues to evolve, its purpose remains the same: helping young people build curiosity, empathy, and relationships that cross borders.

Today, we’re celebrating longtime iEARN-USA educator and project facilitator Kathy Bosiak as she retires from teaching and from her facilitator role with iEARN.

Since joining the iEARN community in 2014, Kathy has brought energy, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to global education to everything she has done. She engaged her students in iEARN projects, participated in the BRIDGE and Christopher Stevens Youth Network programs, served as a Global Education Ambassador, facilitated the Solar Cooker and GOMI projects, and connected with educators from around the world at iEARN Conferences.

One of Kathy’s favorite iEARN memories came during a conference in Argentina, when educators from many countries gathered for World Cup watch parties.

“We learned to celebrate with our friends after a win, commiserate after a loss, and support one another across cultures. Many of us became fast and lifelong friends. We learned to focus on people rather than governments, and we built friendships that will last for the rest of our lives.”

Kathy’s passion for connecting students and educators across cultures has made a lasting impact on the iEARN community. We are deeply grateful for her many years of service, leadership, friendship, and advocacy.

This issue celebrates the students, educators, and alumni who are using global connections to create meaningful change in their communities. From a Philadelphia school connecting with peers in Moldova through iEARN's Meet the World program, to YES alumni leading teacher training and civic education initiatives, to NSLI-Y students building language skills and community ties abroad, these stories demonstrate the lasting power of international exchange.

When young people connect across cultures, they gain more than knowledge. They gain perspective, empathy, and the confidence to make a difference.

As we close the final chapter of Storytelling for Change, we’re reflecting on three incredible years.

Through this virtual exchange program, high school students from Algeria, Tunisia, and the United States came together to share their stories, explore, and gain meaningful technical skills. Students gained experience in digital storytelling, video creation, public speaking, presentation skills, script writing, and editing multimedia projects.

Thank you to the students, educators, facilitators, and partners whose hard work and dedication make programs like this possible.

Congratulations to the newest cohort of students in the Storytelling for Change program! 🎉

Over the past two months, 350 high school students from Algeria, Tunisia, and the United States connected virtually to explore and share about issues that are important to them. They gained strong skills in digital communication, media literacy, and creative problem solving.

We are so proud of everything you accomplished and grateful to the educators and facilitators who supported this journey along the way. 💙🌍

This month, students from Algeria, Tunisia, and the United States in the Storytelling for Change program are diving into their stories and exploring issues they care most about.

They are learning how to:

🎙️ craft narratives
🎬 plan and create digital stories
🤝 work together online
💬 give and receive meaningful peer feedback

We’re so inspired by the ideas taking shape in their storyboards and scripts. We can’t wait to see the final projects!
