Yesterday set the tone for the 10th Annual National Symposium on Solutions to End Youth Homelessness: powerful conversations on the main stage, full breakout rooms, and attendees meeting Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez for a signing of her memoir, My Side of the River.

And we're just getting started. Today we're digging into prevention, direct cash, youth leadership, and what it takes for young people to build lasting financial stability.

Maryland has a real opportunity to show what it looks like to prevent youth homelessness before it starts. In a new Maryland Matters op-ed, PSY co-founder Larry Cohen and local attorney and advocate Tom Coale make the case for Baltimore City and the State of Maryland to invest in future rounds of direct cash for young people at risk of homelessness.

We already have promising evidence that this works. Now the challenge is making prevention part of the system, not the exception. And as we bring people from across the country to Baltimore next week for our 10th Annual National Symposium, the timing couldn’t be better: we have solutions. Now we need to put them into practice at scale.

Any number of problems -- an unexpected expense, loss of transportation, a family fight -- can tip a young person over into homelessness, write Larry Cohen and Tom Coale, but minimal assistance they go into a shelter can help them avoid homelessness.

What does it actually take to end youth homelessness?

In a new Observer op-ed, Point Source Youth Co-Founder Larry Cohen makes the case that housing stability needs to be linked to funding for education, employment, or economic mobility. It is the infrastructure that makes all of those investments possible. We can fund scholarships, job training, internships, and career pathways, but if a young person is facing eviction, we are asking them to build a future without a foundation beneath them. At Point Source Youth, we're arguing that a young person should get the cash they need before a housing crisis becomes homelessness. Philanthropy has an enormous opportunity here. Fund prevention and build housing stability into investments in education and economic mobility from the beginning.
