This post is to provide important historical and genealogical clarification regarding a recent posting from an Argentine source. Specifically, I would like to address the heritage of Gabino Ezeiza, the creator of the first tango rhythm, the "milonga."

Gabino Ezeiza was an Afro-Argentine who was related by blood to Fernando Suarez Paz, the father of Leonardo Suarez-Paz. Leonardo is currently based in New York City, where he serves as the Artistic Director of Nuevo Tango Arts and the Piazzolla100 festival.

It is important to contextualize this within Argentine history, particularly the "Ley de Vientres" of 1813. This law represented an early step toward freeing enslaved people of African descent and fostered a unique ethnic mixing in Argentina. Contrary to the assertions of some US authors, Tango is not exclusively African; rather, it is the result of a complex sociocultural evolution and heritage blending. Leonardo Suarez-Paz’s own lineage reflects this diversity, encompassing African, Italian, British, Argentine indigenous, and Spanish roots. Despite this multifaceted background, he identifies primarily as "Argentine," reflecting the national perspective that prioritizes shared identity over racial distinction.
