The T.J. Martell Foundation

The T.J. Martell Foundation Since 1975, we have funded innovative medical research focused on finding cures for cancer.

Throwback Thursday: New York, 2013.

That night, Carrie Underwood accepted the T.J. Martell Artist Achievement Award at the New York Honors Gala. Honors like that one are how the music industry recognizes the artists who carry our mission into the broader culture, helping fund the high risk, high reward cancer research that other funders overlook.

The same gala returns this fall. The 51st Annual New York Honors Gala takes place on September 15 at Cipriani 42nd Street, with Red Light Management founder Coran Capshaw receiving the Lifetime Music Industry Award.

Thirteen years between two unforgettable nights. The same community, the same promise, the same commitment to funding breakthroughs in cancer research.

Honored to see this in Billboard.

Coran Capshaw, founder of Red Light Management, will receive the Lifetime Music Industry Award at the 51st Annual T.J. Martell Foundation New York Honors Gala on September 15 at Cipriani 42nd Street.

For 50 years, the music industry has banded together at the T.J. Martell Foundation to fund the high risk, high reward research that other funders pass on. Coran's philanthropic leadership is exactly the kind of commitment that makes that mission possible.

Steve Gawley, TJMF Chairman: "Coran's enduring commitment to philanthropy has made a profound impact on our community."

What a night.

To our TJMF Honorees Gary Dell'Abate, and Jeff Smith and Carolyn Duryea of Hourglass Wine, thank you for letting us celebrate you. To Nat Myers, thank you for giving Napa a night of music it will not soon forget. Last but definitely not least thank you to our Chef Christina Machamer for providing wonderful cuisine.

To every guest, every sponsor, and every member of the committee, you made tonight what it was. Because of you, the Foundation continues to fund the trailblazing, high risk, high reward research that defines our 50 years of impact.

Banding together. Funding breakthroughs. Until cancer is cured.

Nearly 47%. That is how much invasive melanoma cases have climbed over the past decade.

Behind every number is a person, a family, a diagnosis no one saw coming. Awareness is not a campaign. It is the difference between catching something early and wishing you had.

This month, check your skin. Check on the people you love. Wear the sunscreen, book the appointment, ask the questions. And when you are ready to push it further, support the research working to bring those numbers down.

Recently at the Pioneers in the Promise Cancer Summit, researchers walked us through the projects shaping what comes next. The next generation of cancer research is already here. And the music industry is making it possible.

What they showed us represents years of work that started as questions no one else was willing to fund. Early detection, new treatment approaches, science that did not exist a decade ago. This is where progress actually begins. Not in the safe middle, but at the edges where most funders will not go.

Music has always been the engine behind it. Every ticket, every table, every show of support from this industry adds up to research that changes outcomes for real people.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and it is a reminder that the work cannot wait. The breakthroughs of tomorrow depend on what gets funded today.

"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light."- Aristotle

At the T.J. Martell Foundation, that light is found in every breakthrough, every discovery, and every life touched by research.

Even in the hardest moments, hope continues to lead the way. For 50 years, the music community has banded together to make sure that light never goes out.

1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

That is not a statistic the T.J. Martell Foundation takes lightly. It is the reason this Foundation exists.

The next breakthrough could change everything. And this community is making sure it happens.

Trustee Spotlight: Afo Verde

Our Trustee, Afo Verde, serves as Chairman & CEO of Latin America, Spain and Portugal at Sony Music. A visionary leader who has helped shape the global reach of Latin music, Afo has spent decades championing artists and building bridges across cultures through the universal language of music.

That same passion for connection and impact drives his commitment to the T.J. Martell Foundation. As a Trustee, Afo brings his influence and dedication to our mission of funding bold, high risk, high reward cancer research at NCI Designated Cancer Centers across the country. It's leaders like Afo who remind us that the music industry's power extends far beyond the stage. It reaches into labs, into communities, and into the lives of patients and families who need breakthroughs most.

Thank you, Afo, for your leadership and commitment to this cause. For 50 years, the T.J. Martell Foundation has banded together the music community to fund the research others overlook, and your voice helps carry that mission forward.

Every breakthrough satisfying enough to change the world started as something small. A new finding in the lab. A question no one else thought to ask. A researcher willing to take the risk.

For 50 years, the T.J. Martell Foundation has funded the kind of bold, unconventional cancer research that leads to those moments. The little tiny breakthroughs and wonderful discoveries that move us all forward.

That work continues because of you. Join us in funding the next breakthrough: https://tjmartell.org/ways-to-give

For over 50 years, the music community has come together through the T.J. Martell Foundation with one shared belief: cancer can be cured.

Not through algorithms or ad campaigns but through handshakes, harmonies, and a relentless commitment to making a difference.

Every dollar raised has supported high risk, high reward research at the nation's top NCI Designated Cancer Centers. The kind of bold, unconventional science that others often overlook, but that leads to real breakthroughs in detection, screening, and treatment.

And it all began with a promise. A father's determination to change the future for his son.

This is what happens when the music industry unites for something bigger than a hit record.
