NEW scholarship opportunity for Tennessee students!

The Takahashi/Alexander Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Tennessee World Affairs Council, Mission Value Partners, and Thierry Porte, challenges students to explore the people, ideas, and partnerships that have shaped Tennessee–Japan relations and share their own vision for its future.

We're inviting students age 13+ who study in Tennessee to explore the past, present, and future of Tennessee-Japan relations through an original essay of 500 words or less. Choose a topic that inspires you, from diplomacy, STEM, business and agriculture, and national defense to communications, culture, or our special "Sensei" category recognizing Japanese language educators.

SEVEN students will receive scholarships of at least $700 each! Winners will also be invited to a special reception in Nashville on October 27, where they can meet others who have helped strengthen the Tennessee-Japan relationship.

Applications are due by noon on October 1, 2026.

This is more than an essay contest; it's an opportunity for the next generation of Tennesseans to discover an incredible international relationship and imagine the role they can play in its future.

The Tennessee World Affairs Council is delighted to welcome Jill Kolin to our Board of Directors! Jill brings more than 25 years of leadership spanning global business, human resources, nonprofit service, and community engagement. As Director of Community Engagement at Trinetix, she builds meaningful partnerships across Nashville's nonprofit, civic, and business communities and founded the company's Nonprofit Partnership Program.

Jill's global perspective has been shaped by a career that has taken her around the world, from leading a 75-person Deloitte team in Hyderabad, India, to supporting international mobility programs for multinational companies and working with FINCA International across 18 country programs. Having lived and worked in India, Mexico City, and Honduras, Jill brings a deep appreciation for cross-cultural connection and international collaboration.

Jill is also no stranger to TNWAC. She previously volunteered with our youth outreach programs and Distinguished Speakers Series, making her transition to Board service especially meaningful.

We are thrilled to welcome Jill's energy, experience, and passion for connecting people and communities to the TNWAC Board as we continue our mission of

The shifting balance of power in West Asia was at the heart of yesterday's fascinating discussion at the Tennessee World Affairs Council’s event.

A packed audience gathered to hear Mohammed Soliman (Middle East Institute) present his new book, "West Asia: The New American Grand Strategy in the Middle East", examining the region’s shifting power dynamics and the changing role of the US.

The idea that the Middle East has been replaced by West Asia offers a powerful lens for understanding the shifting global order, with China, India, Türkiye, and Pakistan among the rising powers reshaping the region.

We also discussed the changing role of the US, Europe’s position, and the Iran War, a situation with few easy answers.

A fascinating presentation followed by an equally engaging discussion!

Today, on , we celebrate the organizations, volunteers, donors, members, partners, and advocates who dedicate their time and resources to strengthening our communities.

Our mission at TNWAC is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: a more informed community is a more connected and capable community. Through global education, thoughtful nonpartisan dialogue, and conversations with diverse leaders and experts, we work to bring the world closer to Tennessee, and Tennessee closer to the world.

But none of this happens alone. Every event attended, membership renewed, donation made, post shared, sponsorship provided, and hour volunteered helps us create opportunities for Tennesseans to understand better the international issues shaping our lives.

This week, the Tennessee World Affairs Council’s Distinguished Speaker Series offered an engaging discussion on the evolving role of the U.S. Armed Forces in national security and global affairs. We are especially grateful to Brown Advisory for sponsoring this event at the beautiful country Club.

Moderated by the historian and researcher Breck Walker, we had the privilege of learning from a distinguished panel of military leaders and experts: LT CMDR Patrick Ryan, the founder of the Tennessee World Affairs Council, BRIG Gen Eden Murrie, and Colonel Kevin Baird, who shared their perspectives and insights on the role of the armed forces in a changing world.

The discussion brought the changing nature of military service and leadership into focus. While people join the military for different reasons, the idea of serving something larger than oneself remains a powerful common thread.
The panel also explored the importance of U.S. alliances, from NATO to partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, and how these relationships contribute to national security and international stability.

Another important theme was the rapidly changing nature of military power. Drones, cyber capabilities, emerging technologies, and a more multipolar world are creating new challenges and requiring new approaches. Adaptability, continuous training, and closer cooperation between the military and emerging technology were highlighted as increasingly important.

Thank you to the panelists for this valuable opportunity to hear different perspectives on how the United States is adapting to a changing security environment and on the role of leadership, alliances, and readiness in that process.
