Your right to vote does not depend on where you sleep at night.
In Onslow County, residents experiencing homelessness have the same constitutional right to vote as every other citizen. Here's what you need to know:
📌 REGISTRATION: If you live in Onslow County but do not have a traditional home, you can list a shelter, a park bench location, or even a street intersection as your "residence" for registration purposes. You do NOT need a permanent home to register.
📌 MAILING ADDRESS: You must provide a mailing address where you can receive election mail. This can be:
• A shelter (like Onslow Community Ministries)
• A friend or family member's address
• A church or nonprofit
• General delivery at the Jacksonville Post Office
📌 VOTER ID: If you don't have a photo ID, you can obtain a free voter ID card from the Onslow County Board of Elections (246 Georgetown Road, Jacksonville, NC 28540 | Phone: (910) 455-4484) or the Sheriff's Office (721 Court Street, Jacksonville). You can also sign a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polls.
📌 SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: During early voting (not on Election Day), you can register and vote at the same time with proof of residence : even if you're unhoused.
📌 POLLING ACCESS: If you need transportation to the polls, our "Ride to the Polls" program can help. Call us for assistance.
💬 No one should be left out of our democracy because of their housing situation. Your voice matters. Your vote counts.
