The Writing Revolution

The Writing Revolution The Writing Revolution is an educational non-profit organization for effective writing instruction

In the United States, only 27% of 8th and 12th graders perform at grade level in writing. The results are even more staggering for low-income students, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners, who often enter elementary school with fewer pre-literacy skills than their peers. Educational standards require students to write more in all subjects, but teachers are often not adequatel

y prepared to teach writing. These deficits lead to academic failure, millions of dollars wasted in college writing remediation courses, and barriers to successful employment. The Hochman Method and The Writing Revolution were created to address this need.

June just isn't June for us without a trip to LA! 🎺

We had a fantastic time at the Teacher Leader Summit in Louisiana, leading sessions and reconnecting with so many of the 7,400 incredible LA educators in attendance.

The energy, the conversations, the commitment to students — it never gets old. Until next year! 🌟

The Writing Revolution is officially in Arizona, and Yavapai County is just the beginning.

Huge love to our partners at Cottonwood-Oak Creek, Beaver Creek, and Mingus Union, and to the incredible leaders making it happen: Superintendent Steve King, Superintendent Jessica Vocca, Director of Curriculum Jaime Woodard, Assistant Principal Justin Monical, Principal-Superintendent Allie Wheeler

Fellow leaders, here is something we do not say out loud often enough: most writing instruction is not writing instruction. It’s assigned writing. And when students arrive at each new grade still struggling to construct a clear sentence, teachers feel like they are starting from scratch every year. That cycle is exhausting, and it does not have to continue.

The Hochman Method gives teachers an explicit, sequenced approach to writing that starts at the sentence level and builds all the way up through essays. It works in every subject, not just English Language Arts. When a whole school or district learns it together, something shifts. There is consistency. There is a shared language. And students actually get better at writing in a way that carries from year to year.

Summer is the right time to make this investment, not just because it is convenient, but because your teachers deserve real space to learn something well before the school year asks everything of them again. TWR's summer training gives them that space.

“I teach multilingual leaners. The Writing Revolution has really helped my stuent learn how to write complex sentences. One of my favorite moments was when I asked a student if he could add a ‘because, but, so’ to his work. And as he was rewriting, he exclaimed that he could add one of those words to every sentence in his work. These students have only been in the US for 1-2 years.” - Rebecca Cullimore, teacher at Madison Middle School in Idaho

We're back from Arizona where we kicked off an exciting new partnership in Yavapai County with Cottonwood-Oak Creek, Beaver Creek, and Mingus Union school districts. Grades 6–9 will be participating in a year-long program featuring TWR training, site visits, and coaching support.

We're also grateful for the support of the Arizona Department of Education in making this work possible across the state.

A huge thank you to the incredible leaders who made this partnership happen: Superintendent Steve King, Superintendent Jessica Vocca, Director of Curriculum Jaime Woodard, Assistant Principal Justin Monical, and Principal-Superintendent Allie Wheeler.

We can't wait to see what students and teachers accomplish together!

We love how Ms. Suri-Kumra (Woodbury Elementary School in MN) is scaffolding TWR strategies for her first graders!

In her words: "After reading Stellaluna, we completed the TWR topic sentence and details activity. We completed this activity whole group using the pocket chart (pic attached). We talked about where each detail belonged and why. My class has the multilingual learners, so we did lots of oral rehearsal and partner share. The next day we went back to the pocket chart and filled in the details again. After completing the chart we worked together and rehearsed how to turn the fragments into complete sentence. We did this for the topic sentence how Stelllaluna is similar to birds. After this about half of the class worked to turn their topic sentence and supporting details into a paragraph. The remaining students stayed on the carpet, and we looked at how we could turn the fragments into complete sentences for how Stellaluna is different. These students have stronger writing skills so I rehearsed with them how to use but to write a compound sentence. They then worked on turning their topic sentence and details into a paragraph."

Something exciting is in the works at TWR. 👀

Our self-paced training is taking off, putting the Hochman Method within reach of more educators than ever. But we know the real revolution happens inside actual school and district buildings, led by the people who know their teachers best.

That's why we are developing a new Facilitator's Guide to help school and district leaders guide their teachers through the self-paced training and turn PLC time into some of the most impactful PD of the year.

We are piloting it in schools right now. Stay tuned. ✍️

Imagine PD for all teachers in all subject areas without all-day sit-and-get sessions. No sub coverage to arrange or trying to find how to turn on the A/C in that building (you know the one). Just high-quality, flexible writing instruction training through The Hochman Method, available live and virtual or fully self-paced, so your teachers can actually enjoy their summer AND walk into fall ready to teach writing with confidence across every subject and every grade.

You get a leader dashboard that shows you who is enrolled, who is making progress, and who has crossed the finish line. They get flexibility. Your students get a year of stronger writing instruction. That is the deal.

See what TWR has waiting for your team this summer. https://hubs.ly/Q04hYLwG0
