For Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to spotlight Patricia Gonzalez, Associate Program Director, whose commitment and pride in her roots continue to inspire our community and strengthen the work we do every day. See what she has to say about her heritage:
Q: What are you most proud of this Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month?
A: I am most proud of being Dominican and of the culture I come from. I love my country, our food, our music, the way we speak, and especially the way Dominicans can turn almost any moment into a celebration when we are together. Even after living in New York for 20 years, I still carry so much of the Dominican Republic with me. I’m proud of where I come from and the values and traditions that have shaped me.
Q: How has your culture or background shaped who you are today?
A: Being Dominican has taught me to find happiness and make the best out of any situation. Growing up with my culture has shown me that no matter what is happening, there is always a reason to come together, laugh, eat, dance, and celebrate life.
As a Dominican woman, my culture has also given me a strong sense of determination. When someone tells me I can’t do something, that I’m not strong enough, or that something isn’t meant for me—especially when those expectations come from men—it motivates me even more. Instead of allowing those words to stop me, they make me want to work harder and prove that I can do what I set my mind to.
Q: Who is a Hispanic historical figure, community leader, or family member who inspires you?
A: A Hispanic historical figure who inspires me is María Teresa Mirabal of the Dominican Republic. I admire her resilience, courage, and willingness to continue fighting for what she believed in, even when she knew she was putting herself in danger. She stood up for what she believed was right despite the risks, and that strength is something I really admire.
Her story reminds me that sometimes doing what is right requires courage, and that you should not give up on what you believe in simply because it is difficult or because someone tells you that you cannot do it. Her strength as a Dominican woman is something that continues to inspire me.
