Please join us in welcoming Karen Bodner to the New York Choral Society Board of Trustees!

Karen proves that you don’t have to be a performer to have music play an important role in your life.

A passionate jazz and blues lover with several musicians in her family, Karen has even made New Orleans a second home. Professionally, she is Head of Market Insights and Initiatives within BNY’s Depositary Receipts platform and brings decades of experience in investment banking, capital markets, and strategic advising.

What drew Karen to NYCHORAL? In her words, it was our “sense of belonging and inclusion” and the energy and enthusiasm of our community.

We couldn’t be happier to have her join it.

Welcome to the Board, Karen!

Please join us in welcoming David Ash to the New York Choral Society Board of Trustees!

If the name Ash sounds familiar to musicians, there’s a reason.

David is the former CEO and General Counsel of Sam Ash Music Corporation, the family-owned musical instrument and professional audio company that served generations of musicians for more than a century.

A graduate of Harvard Law School and Brandeis University, David brings to NYCHORAL a remarkable combination of business leadership, legal expertise, and a lifelong connection to the world of music.

We’re delighted to have that experience, and a deep musical legacy, helping guide NYCHORAL into its next chapter.

Welcome to the Board, David!

Please join us in welcoming Frances Rivera-Medero to the New York Choral Society Board of Trustees!

For Frances, choral music is personal. She began singing in her church’s children’s choir and later sang with the Choir at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law, an ensemble made up entirely of law students.

Today, Frances brings nearly two decades of corporate legal experience, along with expertise in nonprofit governance and organizational stewardship, to NYCHORAL.

We’re thrilled to welcome someone who shares both our love of choral music and our commitment to building a strong, inclusive organization for the future.

Welcome to the Board, Frances!

What does resistance sound like?

This season, the New York Choral Society explores that question through Sacred Resistance, music that reminds us art has always challenged injustice, inspired hope, and brought people together.

We don't believe choral music belongs in a museum.

We believe it belongs in today's conversations.

🎶 Auditions for our 2026–2027 season are now open.

There are moments in every musician's life when one person changes everything.

For our Music Director, David Hayes, that person was Richard Rusack.

As David's undergraduate viola teacher and first musical mentor, Richard helped shape not only his musicianship, but the path that ultimately led him to the conductor's podium. His guidance, encouragement, and belief in a young musician left a lasting imprint that continues to resonate today.

It was a joy to see mentor and student reunited—a beautiful reminder that behind every artist is someone who first saw their potential.

Thank you, Richard, for the extraordinary impact you've had on generations of musicians, and especially on the artistic leader who inspires the New York Choral Society every week.
