The UFOA mourns the passing of retired Firefighter Ralph S. Esposito of Engine 80, who succumbed to a World Trade Center-related illness on September 24, 2026.

Firefighter Esposito proudly served the FDNY for 21 years and also served our nation as a United States Marine.

Beyond his service in the firehouse, Ralph devoted more than 20 years to helping others as a peer and grief counselor with the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. His compassion, understanding, and ability to connect with people during their most difficult moments provided strength and comfort to countless Firefighters, families, and firehouses throughout the Department.

Ralph’s impact extended far beyond his years of active service. He will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to helping his fellow members of the FDNY family.

The UFOA extends its deepest condolences to Ralph’s family, friends, fellow Firefighters, and all those whose lives he touched.

Join the FDNY Holy Name Society for a Mid-Week Retreat, October 21–22, 2026, at Thomas Berry Place in Jamaica Estates.

This 24-hour retreat offers FDNY members an opportunity to step away from the everyday routine, recharge, and spend time with fellow members. Attendees may choose a quiet, more reflective experience or participate in optional workshops and fraternal gatherings.

Check-in begins Wednesday at 3:00 PM, with dinner at 6:00 PM. Thursday will include breakfast, lunch, workshops, prayer, and dinner before the retreat concludes. Each attendee will have an individual room, even if only staying for part of the retreat.

The $200 retreat cost is being fully covered by the FDNY Holy Name Society.

Today marks 10 years since Battalion Chief Michael J. Fahy made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Known as “The Counselor,” Chief Fahy was a respected leader, dedicated fire officer, and devoted husband and father. His courage, humility, and commitment to the FDNY continue to inspire all who knew and served with him.

The UFOA remembers Chief Fahy and keeps his wife, Fiona, and children, Michael, Anna, and Cormac, in our thoughts and prayers.

New York City is expecting heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for localized flooding this weekend.

The UFOA reminds all members and their families to use caution when traveling, avoid flooded roadways and low-lying areas, secure loose outdoor items, and stay clear of downed trees and electrical wires.

Keep phones charged, have flashlights and basic supplies ready, and continue to monitor local weather and emergency alerts as conditions develop.

This past weekend, the UFOA Executive Board took part in the 2026 IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial to honor our fallen members and, most importantly, to stand beside the families and loved ones they left behind.

We were proud to join the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Family Assistance Unit, FDNY Ceremonial Unit, and FDNY firefighters from around the five boroughs in supporting our families throughout the weekend. Together with fire service members from across the United States and Canada, we gathered to honor the lives, service, and sacrifice of those whose names were added to the IAFF Memorial Wall.

For our families, this weekend is about much more than a ceremony. It is about knowing that their loved one’s service and memory will never be forgotten. We were honored to spend time with them, support them, and stand beside them as one FDNY family.

Their names are now permanently memorialized in Colorado Springs, but their legacy lives on in our firehouses, our Department, our union, and in the families and friends who continue to carry their memory forward.

We will continue to support them, honor them, remember them, and be there for their families.

Newly released records from Ground Zero reinforce what our members have known for far too long: the impact of 9/11 continues to be felt more than 25 years later.

UFOA President James Brosi responds to these records and the continuing toll on FDNY members, responders, workers, and residents affected by Ground Zero exposure.

We will continue to fight for those who are ill, remember those we have lost in the days since, and ensure the sacrifices of our members are never forgotten.

Today, 25 years after September 11, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, including the 343 FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice.

We also remember the hundreds of Firefighters who have since died from WTC-related illnesses, and the thousands who continue to live with the lasting effects of that day.

For our families and firehouses, September 11 is not simply history. Its loss, sacrifice, and consequences are carried every day.

To Never Forget means more than remembering the past. It means honoring the fallen, caring for the sick, supporting their families, and continuing to stand for those who answered the call.
