This week, NY Focus reporter Amudalat Ajasa reported on a critical gap in New York's cooling safety net: the state's free air conditioner program ran out of funding on June 5 — before summer even started — for the third year in a row.

The numbers: 23,104 households served in 2024. 20,984 last year. Just 18,500 this year. And while heating assistance is growing, cooling represents just 3% of NY's LIHEAP allocation — compared to nearly 20% in Rhode Island.

Thanks to Amudalat for including our Executive Director Allison Nickerson in the piece. With extreme heat becoming deadlier and the Trump administration again proposing to eliminate LIHEAP entirely, this reporting couldn't be more timely.

Yesterday, LiveOn NY wrapped up Day 2 of our New Directors Training, and what a day it was.
We were joined in person at Chinese-American Planning Council by emerging directors from older adult centers and NORCs across NYC for a full day of learning, connection, and community building. A special thank you to:

And to our phenomenal panel of experienced directors, Alishia Thomas (Central Harlem Senior Citizens' Centers), Angella King (Allen Community Rockaway Blvd. Senior Center), Maya Doyle (MMCC Mosholu Montefiore Community Center), and Sandra Arroyo (Neighborhood SHOPP), thank you for sharing your wisdom with the next generation of aging services leaders.
This training is annual, and designed for directors with 0-5 years of experience. Watching this cohort grow is one of the best parts of what we do. If you weren't able to join this year, no worries -- we'll see you next year!

We had a wonderful visit today to our member Elmhurst Older Adults Center in Queens!

Three hundred older New Yorkers walk through those doors every day for hot meals, community, and programs that actually change lives. The center runs English language and citizenship classes for seniors working toward naturalization. And the teacher leading those classes? She's 95 years old and a participant at the center herself.

Everyone there contributes. Everyone belongs. Centers like Elmhurst are exactly why LiveOn NY fights for full, stable funding for senior services across the five boroughs. The people we met today have earned it.

Proud to celebrate our member WSFSSH on the opening of Fischer Senior Apartments in Highbridge, the Bronx! 🎉

The nine-story, 105-unit building is 100% affordable for adults 55 and older — and 59 units are specifically reserved for formerly homeless older adults. The building also includes an innovative Enhanced Care pilot, developed with NYC Health + Hospitals, that provides on-site personal care services to help seniors live independently — breaking the cycle of emergency rooms and shelter.

A ribbon cutting was held June 9 with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Council Member Althea Stevens, Deputy Mayor Dr. Helen Arteaga-Landaverde, and DFTA Commissioner Lisa Scott-McKenzie. This is exactly the kind of investment our older New Yorkers deserve.

Today we testified before Executive Budget Hearing with a clear message from our 110+ member organizations and the 300,000 older New Yorkers they serve: older adults are the fastest-growing demographic in this city — and they're barely in the budget.

As part of the Age Strong NYC Campaign, we're calling for $2.3 billion to fund what older New Yorkers actually need:

✅ Guaranteed senior affordable housing — the SARA program is at risk
✅ 7-day Home Delivered Meals ($30M) — because older adults need to eat on weekends too
✅ Honoring the new SCRIE income limit increase ($50K → $75K)
✅ Expanding aging services to meet this city's fastest-growing demographic
