The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History The Gilder Lehrman Institute is a nonprofit organization that promotes American history education.

Founded in 1994 by philanthropists Richard Gilder and Lewis E. Lehrman, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is the nation’s leading American history organization dedicated to K-12 education. The Institute’s mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and interactive resources. At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Coll

ection, one of the great archives in American history. Drawing on the 65,000 documents in the Gilder Lehrman Collection and an extensive network of eminent historians, the Institute provides teachers, students, and the general public with direct access to unique primary source materials. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is supported through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Institute’s programs have been recognized by awards from the White House, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Organization of American Historians.

⌛Don't forget to register for the summer Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminars Online! Ten courses will be offered, including "The Making of America: From the Colonial Period Through Reconstruction," taught by David W Blight, Denver Brunsman, Lindsay M. Chervinsky, Historian M. Chervinsky, Historian, and Justene Hill Edwards.

Amid the United States’ semiquincentennial, participants will explore the history of the colonial era, the American Revolution, the early republic, and the origins and aftermath of the Civil War in this special seminar.

This course will run from July 6 to July 10. Sign up by June 29 to deepen your historical knowledge and discover new ways to engage with your students in the classroom!

Students are invited to submit either an interpretive essay focusing on close reading and analysis of one primary source from American history or a research essay incorporating primary and secondary sources on a topic in American history.

K-12 teachers📣 Submissions are open for the Building Better Citizens Contest! Share a lesson plan that creatively uses questions from the United States citizenship test to help support teachers’ use of the test in their classroom.

Ten prize winners will receive cash awards. One first place winner will receive $5,000, two second place winners will each receive $2,500, and seven third place winners will each receive $1,000. Submissions will be accepted through July 3, 2026.

⌛Don't forget to register for the summer Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminars Online! Ten courses will be offered, including "The Civil War Through a Military History Lens," taught by Lorien Foote.

This seminar will demonstrate how to connect the military aspects of the Civil War to America’s social and political history. Participants will learn how specific military campaigns inform topics such as emancipation, refugee movement, guerrilla warfare, conscription, women’s history, and the American West.
