A local business owner, school chefs and college & high school students all made this week amazing for the Friendly Fridge BX community!

Sharing Excess rescued and shared several pallets of incredible fresh produce including pineapple and plantains!!!

Riverdale Country School shared extra catered foods from their homecoming weekend

sienna.spodek and Noah Miller packed up Ethical Culture Fieldston School’s extra food on Thursday and brought it to the Fridge. Sienna initiated this project on her own and has been consistently redirecting food for a few years now. 💥Her thoughtful actions has had an impact beyond measure.

FrassBoxny owner Raj used his truck to transport several boxes of greens to another community food hub in Washington Heights. The community there was so excited to see the fresh lettuce, pickles and collard greens!

Manhattan University and UMSV Campus Life students came and volunteered, helping to sort, package up and share all of the food. They also brought a lively vibe -dancing on the sidewalk, chatting about music, current events and college life.

With a smile and easy stroll down the hill, Kash Sanders and another MU classmate brought extra pastries from 4th Generation Family Bakery. It’s Friday!

Horace Mann School students brought much needed packaged sandwiches and drinks along with hygiene kits for folks in between living spaces.

In a world of chaos, this space at the Friendly Fridge BX runs on good energy and kindness.

These are all photos of plates of food put together at the Friendly Fridge BX. They tell a pretty powerful story of what is possible when a community works together to share food.

Today a man walked up to the Fridge and quietly announced that he was homeless. He stared at us as he said this and held up his hands helplessly.

He asked for some food he could eat right there. He walked away with a plate of fresh chicken fried rice. He packed one more for the road. The rice came from Riverdale Country School who redirects all of their extra food to the Friendly Fridge BX every Friday. They’ve done this for over five years. ❤️

Right behind him was a man in a work vest who asked for something to eat as he was in between his next destination. He picked up a bowl of chicken fried rice and sat in his truck to eat.

Four minutes later a family of three stopped and picked up some plates of food and an elderly couple did the same. One older gentleman sat on a stool, quietly eating his food as the wind picked up leaves and tossed them around.

A volunteer driver stopped by and dropped off several trays of macaroni & cheese from Riverdale Temple along with several wrapped slices of pizza from Marianne’s Pizza Cafe. A mom of three growing teenagers was delighted to get some pizza and cartons of fried rice. She also picked up some apples, pears and bananas shared from another charter school.

As she gathered up her items, she mentioned to a volunteer that her kids were growing so fast and emptying her refrigerator so quickly. She was so thankful to have this extra food. Another nearby mom picked up some snack packs redirected from American Dream School II, Manhattan

Manhattan University students dropped by with a box of left over 4th Generation Family Bakery pastries and an older woman was giddy to get an almond croissant to take home for her morning coffee.

All of this food that was considered “extra” and to be thrown out but was shared instead. People have food that they can safely eat because of this amazing community.

🥗Good food deserves to be eaten — not thrown away!

Week after week, delicious, healthy food is being redirected to the Friendly Fridge BX thanks to incredible local restaurants, schools and organizations like Sharing Excess, Orwashers Bakery, Marianne’s Pizza, Great Performances via Wave Hill, Tierney’s Fine Foods, Riverdale Bagels, Addeo’s Pizza, Moss Café, Atmosphere Academy and more! 🙌

And food sharing doesn’t have to happen on a huge scale. This week, a local family preparing to move realized they couldn’t take everything with them—so instead of tossing perfectly good pantry items, they brought us their spices, seasonings and other staples to share with their neighbors. 🧂🌶️🥫💚

A fellow community organizer once summed up food rescue perfectly:

“Here, we have people who need food and food that needs people!”

It really is that simple.

Whether it’s fresh produce, beautiful loaves of bread, dozens of freshly prepared meals from a restaurant, or a bag of spices from someone’s kitchen, food that can be shared should be shared. 🌎♻️🍴

Restaurants redirect it. Bakeries redirect it. Schools and organizations redirect it. Families redirect it. Volunteers move it. Neighbors share it.

Less waste. More sharing. More good food on people’s tables. Our entire Bronx community benefits.

We do this together — and THAT is worth celebrating! 🎉💚

In catering, a little extra is part of the plan because no one wants to run out of food at a party or an event. But that doesn’t mean those extras have to go to waste. With a bit of redirection magic, surplus becomes something special. Instead of seeing leftover trays as a loss, they can become meals, connection, and care beyond the event.

It’s a simple shift that turns “too much” into exactly what’s needed -supporting communities while cutting down waste at the same time. Everyone wins!

called our team to help share their extras and the impact was enormous! A nearby family shelter, another community fridge and the Friendly Fridge BX community all found delicious, healthy meals thanks to quick thinking and intentional action. And our planet experienced a little less stress.

Hi Folks!

It’s finally feeling like Spring and we’re getting ready for the summer ahead. We need your help with something.

If you’re doing some Spring cleaning and have any of these courier bins laying around that you don’t need, we would love them. Those and shopping bags!
