Check out these pictures from Martin Behrman Charter School Academy of Creative Arts and Sciences in New Orleans. Alumna Cecily White led the school as principal, and this year is stepping into a new leadership role as Executive Director of School Support for the Charter Management Organization that operates the school, Algiers Charter Schools. Hundreds of educators are preparing to walk into a school as principal for the first time. If we could give them one piece of advice, it would be this: Make time to reflect. Regular reflection builds the self-awareness that leads to better decisions, and helps the teachers and staff around you sharpen their own judgment in turn.

Last month, we brought a room full of them together at the New York City Public Schools Leadership Conference. Dr. Miguel Cardona, the 12th U.S. Secretary of Education, keynoted, and our CEO Dr. Lisa Herring moderated a panel with Chancellor Kamar Samuels, Dr. Christina Grant, and Dr. Sonja Santelises.

What does the principalship look like as a career pathway? National data suggests it can mean both expanded leadership responsibilities and substantially higher earnings.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, principals earn a median salary of $103,460, compared to $65,220 for high school teachers — representing a potential increase in earning of up to 60%.

At the same time, the role asks educators to lead at a different scale: guiding instructional vision, leading teachers, and creating the conditions for students and communities to thrive.
