A tunnel book is a wonderful structure that allows the viewer to look within and discover a hidden world evolving in accumulated layers, via the optical illusion of perspective. Come learn how to make your own in the in-person workshop "The Tunnel Book: Setting a Stage" with Maria Pisano.

Traditionally a tunnel book is accompanied by supporting concertinas sides, which make the work collapsible, portable and easily viewable. The book becomes an extension of the reader, who’s able to hold it at eye level and marvel at the show.

How does one create perspective? How do we depict depth os space? Participants will choose landscape images where there is a clear depiction of foreground, middle ground and background. These can be photos you have taken, images you have created, or from a magazine. These images will inspire you to create the design for your pages, with the aid of collage, markers and colored pencils.

Curious about working with your hands to make prints? In the online workshop "Handcarved Blockprints on Paper and Fabric" with Elaine G. Chu, students will design and sketch an object or geometric shape and use a clever transfer technique before carving the image from a slab of rubber. We’ll print on both paper and fabric. Each person will print a set of cards and also a drawstring bag and zip pouch when ordering the supply kit. Participants can also gather their own tea towel, cloth napkin or T-shirt if they’d like to print additional or different items. The instructor will also demonstrate how to construct a sewn booklet, using one of the printed cards as a cover. By the end of this workshop, participants will go home with blockprints they made themselves and have the knowledge and skills to create new designs on their own!

Curious about dyeing with materials you forage yourself? Participants in this workshop will learn multiple plant-based dyeing and printing methods using kitchen and yard waste. We will start by learning how to identify natural versus manufactured fibers (fabrics and yarns), and how to set up a safe fabric and paper dyeing studio at home. The instructor will explain how to prep fabric for dyeing, including how to safely scour and mordant fiber. She will describe how different types of fibers interact with and absorb natural dyes; how to responsibly harvest and forage for natural materials in your neighborhood; and how to begin to identify plants, kitchen waste and spices that are safe to use and yield color. The instructor will also provide resources for learning more about local plants.

Participants will complete two projects which intersect natural dyeing and print-making — bundle dyeing and petal and leaf pounding. Finally, the instructor will discuss immersion or dip dyeing, and solar dyeing, and will share examples of artists’ books made with dyed fabric, yarn and thread.

This workshop is the final installment in a four part series which also covers embroidery, kitchen printing, and fiber book forms.

In this intensive, project-based course taught by CBA instructor María Verónica San Martín and offered as part of the Bookbinding Certificate Program, students will explore the artist book as a creative and expressive medium while developing their own original work over four sessions. The course begins with an inspiring introduction to the history and possibilities of artist books, featuring a presentation of contemporary examples to spark ideas and conversation, along with a close look at selected artist books from the Center for Book Arts collection, produced using letterpress and printmaking techniques as well as handmade binding structures. Students will then move into hands-on making, learning the fundamentals of constructing an accordion book with hardcover and embossed design, as well as a three-dimensional flag book, with plenty of room for experimentation and personal expression. Throughout the course, each student will develop an artist book guided by individual feedback and group discussion, with a focus on concept, narrative, media, and material choices. The course concludes with a supportive final critique and conversation, offering students the opportunity to share their work, reflect on their process, and learn from one another!
