Today is International Day of the Girl, and this year’s global call is to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.

At Huru, we meet girls whose lives look very different from one another. They live in different communities. They carry different responsibilities. They have different dreams for who they want to become.

But every girl deserves the freedom to learn, to understand her body, to make choices about her own life and to imagine a future that belongs to her.

Our part in that work is simple but important: making sure her period does not determine how far she can go.

Wherever she is. 💛

What does it really take to reach girls with menstrual health support?

Sometimes it means carrying Huru Kits the final stretch when the road ends. Sometimes it means working closely with teachers, communities and local partners to understand what girls need most.

In our newest blog, Kenya Country Director Wanjiru Kepha shares what that looks like across very different parts of Kenya.

Monicah has big plans for her future. 💛

At 18, she is in 9th grade, loves music and traditional dance, and dreams of becoming a teacher one day.

But for a long time, her period made being at school harder than it needed to be.

When pads were not available, Monicah often relied on tissue paper. Sometimes it failed, leaving her with a stained uniform and the embarrassment of classmates laughing.

“Lack of sanitary pads has lowered my self-esteem so much.”

Now, Monicah has reusable Huru pads she can rely on, underwear and the information to help her manage her period with greater confidence.

It means school can be less about worrying what might happen and more about learning, participating and looking ahead to the future she is working toward.

And for Monicah, there is a lot to look forward to.

Long roads. New schools. Huru Kits packed and delivered. Questions asked. Stories shared. Notes exchanged. And thousands of moments in between. 🦋

This summer, you followed Huru across Kenya as our teams worked to reach girls before another school day began.

Now, we’re looking back at what all of those moments made possible.
