Meet Beatrice. She first joined Huru through our Skills Development Program in 2020. Today, she is part of our Quality Control team in Nairobi, helping ensure every reusable pad is carefully checked before it becomes part of a Huru Kit.

From the correct size and layering to the final trim, Beatrice knows that the details matter.

“My role is to make sure every pad is made to the right size and properly layered, so girls can feel comfortable and confident using them. Knowing that the care I put into my work can help prevent leaks and make a difference for a girl brings me great joy.”

Behind every Huru Kit are people like Beatrice, bringing skill and care to every step of the journey. Thank you, Beatrice! 💟

"The smiles on their faces were unforgettable. Some held the pads tightly against their chests as though they had received something priceless. Others could not stop smiling. I realized that sometimes the smallest items carry the greatest dignity."

Words from the road as Huru reaches thousands of girls this summer with Huru Kits, education, and support.

15 years later, Joan’s story is a reminder of what lasting support can mean. 💛

In 2011, Joan Amati was in 7th grade at Olekasasi Primary School when she received Huru reusable pads.

Last week, while our team was exhibiting at the East Africa Fashion Life Show in Nairobi, Joan spotted the familiar Huru drawstring bag at our booth and stopped to say hello.

She shared memories of what having reliable menstrual support meant for her and her classmates at the time, helping them manage their periods and continue attending school.

Today, Joan is a model, fashion designer, and crochet teacher based in Nairobi.

Her story gives you a glimpse of what can unfold when girls have the support they need during their school years, and the futures they go on to build for themselves.

We’re grateful to Joan for sharing her experience with our team!

Meet Maureen, a 15-year-old student with a love for public speaking and a dream of becoming a journalist.

At school, she is an active member of the journalism club and often reads the news during assemblies. But during her period, staying focused has not always been easy.

Receiving her Huru Kit changed that.

“I feel valued and remembered. I feel like I belong. I will be able to learn comfortably and achieve my dreams. I am determined to build a better future for myself.”

Thank you to everyone who makes it possible for girls like Maureen to keep learning and pursuing their dreams. 💜

What questions do girls ask during Huru sessions? 🦋

Girls lead with questions that are practical, personal, and often difficult to ask elsewhere.

They want to know:
How do I wear a reusable pad correctly?
How often should I change it?
How do I wash, dry, and store it safely?
What should I do if my period begins while I am at school?
How long will the pads last?
Is it normal for my cycle to be irregular?
How can I manage cramps or discomfort?
Can I still play sports and take part in everyday activities?

For most girls, it's the first time they have had an opportunity to speak openly about menstruation and receive clear, accurate answers without embarrassment or judgment.

Our trained facilitators guide girls through how to use and care for every part of their Huru Kit, address common myths and misconceptions, and create space for questions that may have gone unanswered for years.

Providing menstrual supplies matters, but making sure a girl understands her body, knows how to manage her period, and feels prepared when it comes matters too.

Two friends. Two big dreams. 💜

Evaline hopes to become a teacher. Jamila wants to become a doctor.

This month, they received Huru Kits at Kelele Comprehensive School, and one less reason to miss class.

When we recently reunited with Sharline, she surprised us with something special: a handwritten letter for everyone who helped make her journey possible.

Sharline received her Huru Kit last year. In her letter, she shares what has changed since then, and what having reliable menstrual health support has meant for her at school and beyond.

Her words are a meaningful reminder that the impact of a Huru Kit can continue long after the day it is received.

As Huru works to reach more girls across Kenya this summer, we are deeply grateful to everyone helping make moments like this possible. 💜
