What happens when we treat culture like a commodity?

In many parts of the world, foods are protected not simply because they’re delicious, but because they represent a place, a history, and a community. They become part of a shared identity.

In this “TEDx Tastings”, Kurt Mullican, founder of Grey’s Fine Cheeses, asks us to reconsider what we’re preserving—and what we’re overlooking.

America produces extraordinary cheeses, wines, and agricultural products. Yet we often treat them as interchangeable products rather than cultural expressions worth protecting.

What if we created stronger ways to recognize and protect the foods that tell the story of where we live?

Kurt argues that regional designation systems can help preserve local traditions, support producers, create jobs, protect consumers, and give communities something to rally around.

If Champagne can be protected, what American products deserve the same recognition?

Watch the video and join the conversation.

These are the people we trust to tell our stories.

When people see a TEDxNashville talk online, a social clip in their feed, or a photo from one of our events, they’re seeing the work of people like Adam Mescan, Brian Smith, Mick Jacob, and Matthew Simmons.

Over the last year, TEDxNashville has evolved from a handful of annual events into a true year-round membership community. We’ve been able to experiment with new ideas, launch new event formats, and create far more content than ever before.

That simply would not have happened without the generosity of these four creatives.

They have given their time, talent, energy, and expertise to help us build something bigger than any one event. They’ve shown up early, stayed late, solved problems, captured moments, and helped us preserve ideas that otherwise would have disappeared when the lights went down.

Their work has played a major role in helping our membership series take off, and in helping TEDxNashville reach people far beyond the walls of any venue.
I’m deeply grateful not only for what they create, but for who they are.

If you’re looking for a photographer or videographer in Nashville, I’d encourage you to take a look at their work. You can connect with them directly through their Instagram pages, or email [email protected] and we’re happy to make an introduction.

Thank you, Adam, Brian, Mick, and Matthew. TEDxNashville is better because of you.

When Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery restarted the distillery, they couldn’t begin with a whiskey entirely their own.

Because great whiskey takes time.

So they began as blenders — taking something already in motion and adding their own final refinement.

But over time, that necessity became a philosophy:

The art of the last touch.

The realization that the first contribution isn’t always the most important.
The loudest voice isn’t always the defining one.
And greatness is often shaped by the people willing to add the final 10%.

The patient refinement.
The quieter wisdom.
The care to leave something better than they found it.

In many ways, that’s true of all of us.

We are all on a path of refinement.
Built by the people who poured into us.
Shaped by trust, collaboration, mentorship, and community.

No one becomes great alone.

Not whiskey.
Not a city.
Not a person.

The things that endure are created when people trust each other enough to keep refining what someone else began.

Consciousness & Cocktails at Eleven11

Free RSVP at TEDxNashville.com/events or click the link in our bio.

What happens when we stop treating curiosity like something to outgrow?

The Science of Woo is a TEDxNashville series exploring the space where neuroscience, consciousness, intuition, human experience, and mystery intersect. Not to prove or debunk — but to ask better questions together.

This gathering at Eleven11 is designed as a more intimate evening of conversation and connection for people drawn to the deeper questions beneath modern life:
* Why do certain experiences feel meaningful?
* What happens in flow states?
* Is consciousness something we fully understand?
* What can science explain — and where does lived experience still matter?

Expect thoughtful conversation, new connections, cocktails, and a room full of people curious enough to explore ideas without needing absolute certainty.

Whether you’re deeply scientific, spiritually curious, skeptical, or somewhere in between, you belong in the conversation.

Presented by TEDxNashville as part of The Science of Woo.

Seats are running out for FLOW

A night exploring:
— why the brain is designed to pursue rather than simply obtain
— what happens neurologically when we stop clinging to our thoughts
— how athletes, musicians, and meditators access heightened states of awareness
— why flow may reveal something essential about consciousness itself

A flow artist and somatic guide
Michael Jordan’s mindfulness coach
Two neuroscientists exploring consciousness
And a room of people curious about the same things as you.
