Second Chance Hero is a non-profit focused on helping those fighting for a second chance. We help the congenital community and their families navigate the transplant journey.
While waiting for life-saving organs, our founder Rafi Barragan realized that congenital patients like him are often turned away as transplant candidates because of the increased risk and complexity created by the unique anatomy of congenital heart disease. Patients like our founder are forced to scour the world for a center with the skills and will to offer them a chance at a better life through heart transplant.
Too often, patients have to uproot their lives and commit to moving near a center like Vanderbilt or UCLA that is willing to take a chance on them. Beyond the insurance and financial ability to pay for transplants, congenital patients must burden the cost of relocation for up to a year - before being accepted as a transplant candidate.
A congenital patient can check every box as a candidate for a heart transplant. If unable to relocate, they may not be listed and denied life-saving treatment.
@ Second_Chance_Hero,, we're fighting for a world where no patient is ever denied a second chance because they lack the resources to afford relocation or the support they need to navigate the transplant journey.
We aim to help patients by providing four key support services.
Care Packages:
comfortable bedding, streaming, massage therapy, and more, our little comforts bring a sense of normalcy to hospitalized patients
Pet Therapy:
Our pet therapy team helps reduce stress, brings joy, and encourages optimism with every patient visit.
Mental Health Support:
Mental strength is the key to better outcomes, so we offer 1:1 ag group therapy sessions with experienced clinicians and support groups who are transplant survivors themselves.
Temporary Housing and Travel:
Our future goal is to assist patients who need to relocate near a transplant and congenital center of excellence for life-saving treatment.
We're debuting our mission at the Adult Congenital Heart Association Regional conference on October 21st - 22nd. We hope to see you there! ๐ฅน
