The Delaware dietetic community mourns the loss of Marianne Carter, a passionate advocate, remarkable leader, trusted mentor, and dear friend.

Marianne served in several leadership roles within the Delaware Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, including President and Media Representative. She championed accurate, evidence-based nutrition information, helped advance Delaware’s first dietetics licensure law, and dedicated herself to strengthening and advancing our profession.
Marianne was also known for her kindness, compassion, generosity, and belief in the healing power of food. Through her volunteer work with Lasagna Love, she helped bring comfort, connection, and hope to families and individuals in need.

We invite you to honor Marianne’s legacy by volunteering with Lasagna Love or making a donation at lasagnalove.org.

Her impact on our profession, our community, and our hearts will not be forgotten. We will miss her deeply and carry her legacy forward.

Delaware dietitians, we’re sharing an important update regarding reported concerns about how Aetna may be processing preventive medical nutrition therapy and nutrition service claims.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has received reports of:
• Changes related to Aetna’s preventive services obesity policy, which has historically covered up to 26 visits
• A preventive nutrition policy change effective August 15, 2026, including the removal of Z71.3 from certain preventive coverage criteria
• Possible co-pays, deductibles, or claim denials for services that were previously covered at 100% without cost-sharing
It has not yet been determined whether these concerns reflect an intentional policy change, a billing or claims-system issue, or a combination of both. The Academy has contacted Aetna leadership and is working to obtain clarification.
If you’ve experienced Aetna claim denials, changes in preventive MNT coverage, unexpected patient cost-sharing, or other related billing concerns, please contact me. Your information can help clarify the scope of the issue and support follow-up.

📢 Attention Delaware Dietitians

Highmark is implementing important changes to its Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) benefits beginning in August 2026.

Key updates include:
• A new 5-hour annual MNT benefit cap
• Updated prior authorization requirements for medically necessary services beyond the cap
• Additional guidance on the review process

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is actively advocating for both RDNs and patients and continues to work with Highmark to support evidence-based access to MNT services.
