As some of you know Fox 9 News was at MACC yesterday to let the community know we are starting our Sponsor a Kennel Program that was just passed by the Minneapolis City Council in recent weeks. We learned about this sponsorship program when a MACC volunteer went to Jacksonville Humane Society to learn about Playgroups, and learned they offer a sponsor a kennel program.

Your sponsorship helps create a safe and nurturing environment for animals as they wait for their forever families. Contributions support the needs of MACC animals with treats, enrichment items to prevent kennel stress, medical and non medical equipment to benefit the animals, and to help animals thrive during their shelter stay.

All sponsors will have a plaque placed on MACC's dog kennels or cat condos for 1 year with the memo of their choosing. The year begins when the plaque is placed on the kennel.

You can put your name, business name, organization affiliations, and in honor of or in memory of added to the kennel plaque. It's a meaningful way to honor a special person or pet while directly impacting the lives of animals in need.

There are two options to sponsor a kennel at MACC with pricing:

Sponsor a Kennel (Plaque Only) is $600.00 with a one time payment, or 12 monthly recurring payments of $50.

Sponsor a Kennel Plaque and information on animals in the kennel you are sponsoring. MACC Pack will send you monthly information via email about an animal that stayed in the kennel that you are sponsoring. Sponsorship for this is $1,200.00 with a one time payment, or 12 monthly recurring payments of $100.

This program will roll out on July 6th 2026, and you can sponsor early by clicking on the link below:

To watch Fox 9 story from their Good Day episode we are at the 32:30 mark in this episode:

Our first sponsorship came in to honor a MACC volunteers's beloved pittie Fallon (who unexpectedly passed away from Leptospirosis), through a collective donation from MACC volunteers.

MACC Pack Monday is here! Every Monday for the foreseeable future MACC Pack will permanently be sponsoring the adoption fee of an animal at MACC.

As summer officially kicks off, Nala Jo is ready to trade shelter life for sunshine filled adventures, and a cozy spot by your side. This sweet 5 year old Pit Bull mix is the perfect blend of laid back and loving. She enjoys her walks, though she's still polishing up her leash manners and can be a bit of a puller. Her favorite part of any stroll? Stopping for long sniff breaks to investigate all the exciting smells of the season. A harness helps her put her best paw forward! Nala Jo recently attended an adoption event at Fowling Warehouse, and handled the hustle and bustle like a champ. Despite all the excitement, she stayed calm, quiet, and well-mannered. She didn't bark, wasn't bothered by other dogs, and happily took everything in stride. When the adventure is over, Nala Jo's favorite place is right next to her people, preferably touching them. This cuddly girl loves to lean in close and hand out plenty of sweet kisses. She’s also a fantastic car companion and enjoys feeling the summer breeze with her head out the window. She likes toys too, especially carrying one around proudly while she relaxes. It's just one more charming thing about this easygoing girl. She has been in MACC Playgroups twice and has been pretty low key and not reactive to other dogs in the run. She is the type to sit off to the side, and would rather observe the dogs in playgroups rather than initiate play. If your summer plans include a loyal best friend, endless cuddles, and a co-pilot for all your adventures, Nala Jo is ready to make this her season to shine.

MACC is open Monday- Friday from 1:00-5:00 for adoptions. Nala Jo is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption.

MACC is located at:
212 17th Ave. N
Minneapolis, MN

At Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, dogs arrive every day carrying different stories. Some are lost, abandoned or some simply end up in the wrong hands before finding their way to people willing to recognize their potential. A Belgian Malinois named Lexi (now Kiivihiili) found exactly that opportunity. She arrived at MACC as a stray on a cold December day. Gracia, a MACC volunteer, saw her potential and networked her to Northern Lakes Rescue (shout out to her foster Savannah), she is now working on obedience and foundations of Search and Rescue training with Backcountry Alaska Rescue K9. Her name carries a deeper meaning. “Kiivihiili,” derived from the Finnish word for carbon, reflects both strength and transformation. Carbon is one of nature’s most adaptable elements, under pressure, it becomes diamond. In another form, it fuels fire and energy. That symbolism mirrors the journey of many working dogs; intense, powerful, and capable of extraordinary things when placed in the right environment.

Kiivihiili’s path began in a shelter kennel. Belgian Malinois are among the world’s most driven working breeds. Known for intelligence, athleticism, and relentless focus, they are commonly selected for military, police, and search operations. But those same traits can make them difficult household pets for owners unprepared for the breed’s energy and mental demands. Too often, highly driven dogs are misunderstood. What some see as “too much dog” can actually be the exact qualities needed for search and rescue work: determination, confidence, endurance, and an intense desire to work alongside humans. In the chaos and stress of shelter life, those instincts can appear overwhelming. In the field, they become lifesaving tools.

Kiivihiili’s story challenges the idea that shelter dogs are broken or lesser animals. Many are simply dogs whose abilities were never fully understood. Sometimes she is simply waiting for work worthy of who she was built to become. Kiivihiili is the third dog in recent years that has left MACC to be utilized as a working dog for SAR or Law Enforcement work.
