Mississippi Valley Orchestra

Mississippi Valley Orchestra Excellent community orchestra playing incredible music east and west of the Mississippi River Founded as a chamber group in 1976 by Edward Schlueter in West St.

The Mississippi Valley Orchestra is a civic orchestra whose star is rising. Paul/Mendota Heights, MVO is now a polished symphony orchestra that performs in venues throughout the Twin Cities. The amateur and professional musicians of MVO, along with Concertmaster Sarah Grimes (Minnesota Orchestra) and Artistic Director and Conductor Kornel Thomas, prepare five excellent concerts each year, perform

ing a wide variety of classical music and partnering with soloists and groups from the Minnesota Orchestra, the University of Minnesota, and other local arts and educational organizations. Also, every spring MVO plays one movement of a piano concerto with the winner of the St. Paul Piano Teachers Association concerto competition—often the student’s first experience playing with an orchestra. MVO has achieved a reputation among its partners and supportive, growing audiences for serious music making, and also for sincere collegiality within the orchestra and its all-volunteer yet professional board of directors. We are proud to be the only community orchestra in the area that charges no dues and whose concerts are all free.

What better way to spend your evening than on the patio at Lake Monster Brewing and King Coil listening to eclectic tunes from the MVO Crewtets.

We personally can't think of much better. We start at 6:00! See you then.

Happening this Sunday!

Embark on a musical voyage with MVO on Sunday, March 1 at 3:00 pm at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi (900 Stillwater Road) as we explore how composers across time have drawn inspiration from the majesty and movement from bodies of water.

The concert features Dr. Jeremy Reynolds, Clarinet, in the Minnesota Premiere of Jenni Brandon's fascinating 2023 Fin de la Tierra: Land's End Clarinet Concerto. Also on the program are Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans; Germaine Tailleferre’s Petite Suite; Antonín Dvořák’s The Water Goblin; and Bedřich Smetana’s "Vltava" (The Moldau).

Learn more about these pieces, the soloist, and the orchestra in the online version of our program book here:

Come early for Artistic Director Kornel Thomas' pre-concert talk at 2:15 (and to make sure you get your favorite flavor of fudge, still only $10 a box!)
As always, the concert is free (donations welcome).
