Passive House Minnesota

We are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Passive House Minnesota was founded by Tim Delhey Eian of TE Studio in 2008.

Passive House Minnesota is a group of Minnesota-based Passive House professional, practitioners, and supporters who educate and promote the Passive House building energy standard. Since then, it has supported the building standard in the state of Minnesota, its neighboring states and throughout North America. Minnesota is home to North Americas’ first certified Passive House, the Waldsee BioHaus, designed by North American Passive House pioneer and registered Architect Stephan Tanner in 2005 and completed in 2006. It represents ground zero for the World’s leading building energy standard in North America. Experts say "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere", as Minnesota climate is one of the toughest in the World to build in.

"From Straw Houses to Straw Buildings: Lessons from France"
France’s century-old straw-building tradition—and its relevance to American Passive House practitioners—is anything but new. Drawing on examples documented by Topophile, Martin will examine straw’s thermal performance, low-carbon potential, agricultural origins, and integration with wood and other natural materials. He will also explore how France’s building regulations and professional rules recognize and enable straw construction. Connecting this experience with today’s high-performance construction goals, the talk offers practical inspiration for healthier, lower-carbon, climate-resilient buildings using local materials affordably. Twin Cities building science folks—let’s raise a glass to high-performance design!

Join us for a Passive House Happy Hour! We’re bringing Passive House Minnesota and Phius Alliance Minnesota communities into the same room. Too often our communities operate in parallel. This is our chance to build real connections, share knowledge, and leverage our collective impact to grow the Passive House movement in Minnesota.

We’re gathering practitioners, enthusiasts, and anyone curious about high-performance building to connect, share ideas, and grow the movement together.

Help us shape it, name it, and brand it!

We’re looking for your creative input during this Happy Hour. We invite you to bring print outs of your ideas, doodles, sketches, or fully formed concepts for a group name and logo for our PHMN + Phius Alliance Minnesota Happy Hour group.

We’ll display and vote on our favorite!

Join us Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Bring your questions, projects, or ideas and enjoy the company of the Passive House building community.

6:00pm - 7:30pm at The Market at Malcolm Yards near University Ave SE and 280. We will be either at the patio on the north side or just inside this entrance-weather depending. Just look for the sign.

This is an informal social event for ALL Passive House interested people-professional or curious. No registration necessary. Food and drink (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) options available.

What a wonderful happy hour! Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for in depth and engaging conversations. The interest in is growing! What energy we all had last night! We are ready to buildings and environments to be in these changing climate days and to reduce our contribution to and , and have buildings that are more comfortable and protect us from wildfire smoke and allergens. And thank you to for the welcoming environment, fantastic (as always!) beers, and a taco truck on Cinco de Mayo! Join us for our next happy hour on Tuesday July 7, 6pm at Bauhaus Brew Labs in Northeast Minneapolis. Next meeting is online at noon CT, May 26.
