Metro Blooms is a Minnesota-based nonprofit that partners with communities to nurture and support thriving ecosystems, land, and water.

We practice shared leadership and care, moving toward environmental justice. We promote environmentally sound practices in our own yards and in the larger environment. We partner with communities, including property owners and residents, businesses, organizations, local governments and watershed districts, to create resilient landscapes and foster clean watersheds, embracing the values of equity and inclusion to solve environmental challenges.

This Metro Blooms Design+Build project was a fun one to pull together. 💫

We created a side yard rain garden and woodland meadow rain garden in the backyard with a radial design, centered around a new lantern and the client’s beautiful river birch tree. 🌳

An overhead conveyance system built by our friends at Potluck Build brings stormwater runoff from the house roof into the rain garden inlet, where the native plants will soak up and slow the flow. 🌼💧

This project involved clearing out some aggressive w**ds and working around the existing tree roots, but the challenges were so worth it! Runoff is redirected to the native plantings, and the client’s previous water pooling issue is solved. ✅

Our client is looking forward to their mornings on the screen porch enjoying the sight! 💜

❄️ Getting your pollinator garden ready for winter? Keep it simple! A little less cleanup goes a long way for native plants, pollinators, and wildlife.

🧹 Leave stems standing: Dead stems provide important nesting habitat for stem-nesting bees. If you trim, leave at least 18 inches.

🌼 Keep seedheads in place: Coneflowers, Joe Pye w**d, black-eyed Susans, and other native perennials offer winter food for birds.

🍁 Use leaves wisely: Keep leaves out of streets and sidewalks to protect waterways, then tuck them into garden beds or beneath trees to create overwintering habitat for butterflies and moths. Add mulch around new plantings and transplants to help retain moisture and protect roots.

Small choices now can make a big difference for next season’s garden — and the pollinators that depend on it. 🐝

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Metro Blooms’ work takes place on the stolen homelands of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. The native plants we use in our sustainable landscaping projects are part of traditions that Indigenous communities have cultivated and cared for across generations.

As an environmental organization, we know there is much to learn from Minnesota’s Indigenous communities about reciprocity, stewardship, and our relationship to the land and water.

Even as the days get cooler, native plants still need regular watering to head into winter strong. 💧

While blooms may be dying out, fall is a key growth time for perennials. Now that they no longer have to put energy into making flowers, they devote their energy to their roots. And a robust root system means a more resilient plant next year. 🌟

Especially for establishing plants (1-3 years old), keep watering 1 inch a week when it doesn’t rain. Keep watering until the ground freezes, easing up as temperatures drop. It has been a dry summer in Minnesota, so your plants will appreciate the extra love! 💚

This September we had another amazing Sustainable Landcare Training at the Regional Apprenticeship Training Center in North Minneapolis! 🌳🌼

In addition to learning about native plants, rain garden care, and green career pathways, participants engaged in a creative writing activity with Desdamona Ross. 📝

This gave everyone a chance to reflect, process, and decompress from some of the difficult topics that arise when discussing injustices in our environment while exploring personal expression. 🧡

Thank you to our participants for bringing such an enthusiastic and curious energy to our shared space!

Lawns to Legumes: Building Pollinator Habitat at Home 🦋🐝

Join Minnesota Women in Conservation on October 28th to hear directly from the people running Lawns to Legumes and from women in our network who have gone through the process themselves, so anyone thinking about applying this spring knows exactly what to expect.

Pollinator habitat doesn't have to start on acres of land. It can start in a yard! Lawns to Legumes is a Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources program that helps residents establish pollinator habitat, including pocket plantings, pollinator lawns, and native trees and shrubs.

Join us to hear about the impact of the Lawns to Legumes program, details on the upcoming Spring 2027 grant application, plus, tips on how to start a residential pollinator habitat project using Blue Thumb's planning resources. On a warm evening in early August, a group of people gathered in a circle in Lisa’s North Minneapolis front yard.

By the end of the night, everyone helped plant two triangle-shaped garden beds hugging the walkway to Lisa’s front porch, filled with native plants especially preferred by the monarch butterfly. 🌱🦋

“It was such an emotional time” Lisa says, recalling planting during the workshop. “The community, the people who came to help, that was a whole different level.”

Thanks to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Small Grant, Metro Blooms was able to provide free native plants and gardening resources to 30 Twin Cities Metro residents who would otherwise not be able to afford a pollinator garden.

We worked with participants to select plants and tools, and then shared a workshop at Lisa’s house to get hands-on practice prepping a site, laying out plants, planting, and garden care basics like watering and w**ding.

“To see people willing to help with the process was amazing,” Lisa remarked. “That’s what community should be like—that in spite of difference, we can come together.”

A rain garden can help you better manage water in your outdoor space. 💧🏡

If you have a stubborn wet spot in your yard, or frozen puddles that form on your sidewalk or driveway every winter, a rain garden can help redirect that water while providing beauty and wildlife habitat!

When choosing a spot for your rain garden, keep these tips in mind:

💧 Place it at least 10 feet from your home’s foundation.

🌳 Stay outside the dripline of trees to protect their roots.

🚫 Avoid utility lines and septic systems.

➡️ Direct downspouts, sump pump outlets, or driveway runoff into the garden.
