This month’s featured artist is Antion Daniels! His bio reads: “I am an aspiring artist, trying to get better at my craft. My mediums include pencil, marker, paintbrush, and most of all, spray paint. Making art relaxes me. I draw inspiration from graffiti magazines and graffiti I see from all over the world, Europe and France.”

Head over to Hennepin County Library Franklin Library to see work by Avivo ArtWorks member Steven Accola! Steven has multiple newer paintings up, is featuring pages from his “Clown Zine,” and even hung a painted briefcase.

The poster for his exhibition reads: “vMy name is Steven Accola and I live in Minneapolis. I’m an Artist who works at Avivo ArtWorks. My Art is an appreciation if life. As my Art turns, so do I.

Our newest show SHINE is on display through July at 229 Irving Ave in Minneapolis at the Northside Artspace Lofts. Our reception was wonderful. Seven members read pieces both new and old. You can visit it by buzzing the main office M-TH between 9-4 and on Friday from 9-3!

The description for the show reads: “Everything we see, the entire visual world (from the eerie glean on the edge of an owl’s eye to bioluminescent algae and the sun itself) is within the spectrum of light - if it appears, it either shines or reflects light from another source. In German, this is clearer, because the word “schein” refers to both “shining” and “appearance.” This show, SHINE, featuring works produced by members of Avivo’s ArtWorks program, attests to the varied ways we take in and process the world around us through artistic practice. More than that, these works don’t just show us the world, they express joy in seeing the miraculous in the miniature, wonder in the fact that things simply are and appear to us in such varied ways.

Our featured artist for June has been Chelle, or Innocent Child Creations. She is a multimedia artist and poet, and we are honored to display her work in the studio. She also has work up at our “SHINE” show through July at 229 Irving Ave N. See our previous post for more information about how to view her art.

Our next show, SHINE, will be up starting June 20th at the Northside Artspace Lofts! Join us for a reception on the 20th from 5-8 pm, then visit any weekend between 9-4 (just buzz the office for entry). The show will up until early August and will feature works from ArtWorks members. The show is a chance to celebrate all the things that shine in our lives.

Huge thanks to all the members and staff for another successful Art-A-Whirl! 1000s of people came through the building and were exposed to the wonderful work that goes on here. Over 40 members participated this year and showed art, worked as an ambassador, led workshops, or read for our reception on Friday. Thanks to everyone who came through to support us and to all who continue to support what we do providing a community space for adults with mental illness to develop themselves and their art.

Our biggest event of the year, Art-A-Whirl, starts tomorrow, Friday, with our reception from 5-8 (readings around 6:30 pm). Our weekend hours are 12-6 Saturday, and 12-5 on Sunday. We had our highest level of participation ever, with 40+ members contributing multiple pieces each. They made paintings, photos, jewelry, zines, ceramics, and more! See you soon!

The newest volume of the ArtWorks literary and arts zine “The Groundhog” will be available for sale at Art-A-Whirl this year! 13 members contributed collage, original drawings/paintings/digital art, poetry, and more. Only $3 (or $5 with our new coloring book)! Come pick one up during our reception this Friday between 5-8 (When you can also hear members read original works around 6:30pm) or during our AAW open hours 12-6 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday.
