Our annual Eid Qurban celebration was a success! Community members enjoyed an Afghan trivia game and a performance from Ritika and Shinjan. The new playground and children’s carnival was especially popular. 🛝

Thank you to our volunteers and to and for bringing the music the community loves! Thanks also to the MN department of human services for posting up an information table at the event!

Last week our executive director was asked to speak during the Ramsey County commissioners meeting where a proclamation was made for mental health awareness month. ACS was joined by Copal and NAMI MN to represent the communities they serve and to bring awareness to the increased need in support after operation metro surge.

Later that day she went to the state capitol and spoke in solidarity with our Somali brothers and sisters at a CAIR MN event.

A powerful day of solidarity and community!

Join on Friday, May 22nd for another poetry workshop!

Solidarity Couplets
In this poetry workshop we will consider solidarity through the lens of contemporary women poets of Afghanistan. We will read Pashto and Persian poetic forms in English translation and we’ll explore writing our own poetry in these poetic forms (in the languages we are most at home in). This workshop will also offer space for meaningful discussion and reflections on solidarity, witness, and resistance within our current communal context.

This workshop is supported in part by Forecast Public Art’s Artist as Witness grant.

Monday was API day, so the team visited the MN state capitol to honor 250 years of Asians of all backgrounds playing an integral part in the story of the United States. We were honored to be surrounded by community leaders representing peoples all across Asia and to listen to stories from
of courage, innovation, service, and struggle.

Our Executive Director, Nasreen Sajady, affirmed the need to stand with all communities made vulnerable by structural white supremacy in the U.S., and shared the way her own families story of arriving from Afghanistan to build fulfilling lives in this country inspires her to fight for the dignity and independence of recently arrived refugees today.

Nasreen also acknowledged the need to open the way everywhere for young girls in particular to become free agents, unhindered by colonial violence, racism, sexism, war, poverty, and exploitation.
