How do you know that these ballot counting machines accurately count our ballots? The Secretary of State’s office tests their accuracy before the election and again by local officials after the election.

Here is some information you should know to feel secure about the accuracy of the ballot counting machines. For more information go to the Minnesota Secretary of State website (https://www.sos.mn.gov/elections-voting/secure-and-fair-elections).

Election equipment used in Minnesota is tested and certified by experts at federally accredited test labs. The test labs Minnesota uses must be accredited by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (https://www.eac.gov/voting-equipment/system-certification-process)

Additionally, local election officials are required to securely store this equipment and test it before every election.

Before every election, local election officials test all equipment to be used in that election. During the first round of tests, a set of pre-marked ballots is fed into the ballot counting machines, and the machine's totals are compared with the pre-determined results.

Some equipment is also tested at a Public Accuracy Test shortly before the election. Public Accuracy Tests are open to the public—contact your local election official (https://www.sos.mn.gov/elections-voting/find-county-election-office/) to find the time and location of their testing schedule for the fall election.

After each state general election, counties randomly select a set of precincts where they audit the results from the ballot counting machines. In this audit, ballots from certain offices are counted by hand and that total is compared with the machine-counted results from election night. For 2026 the post-election review is mandated for U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, and Minnesota Governor.

The county auditor must notify the Secretary of State of the precincts chosen for review, along with the time and place the review will be conducted as soon as the decisions are made. The public is welcome at these recounts.

Paper ballots are the cornerstone of ballot security in Minnesota. Minnesota uses ballot counting machines to tabulate the paper ballots. These machines are not connected to the internet so they cannot be hacked.

What happens to your paper ballot after it is counted?

Ballots are placed in ballot transfer cases and sealed with two certification seals.
Two election judges (one must be either the head election judge or the assistant head election judge) oversee the process and sign off on mandated forms.
Sealed ballot boxes are transferred to Hennepin County Elections and stored for 22 months.
