Victory Garden Initiative We build communities that grow their own food to create a community-led, socially just, environmentally sustainable, nutritious food system for all. Move grass.

This is a grassroots movement. Grow Food. Victory Garden Initiative believes that every person, in every household, must connect to their food source, through the act of growing it. This act reminds us that we are of the earth, that we cannot live without the earth, that our needs our met, not by the economy, but from the earth. Growing food will re-integrate us with deep ecology, guiding our culture towards a sustainable, abundant future, freed from financial inequalities.

We wrapped up our 17th Annual Great Milwaukee Garden Blitz just over a month ago and we have some BIG thank you’s to give to our sponsors, volunteers, garden recipients, and supporters! Let’s take a look at some of the numbers from this year:

🫜 roughly 250 volunteers served
🫜 300+ raised garden beds built
🫜 139 cubic yards of soil delivered for revitalizing

We could not have done this without the generous sponsors who help us continue bringing this event to you every year! Since 2009, we have built 7,800 raised garden beds across Milwaukee. What makes the Blitz so unique is the continued participation from our community every year, whether that’s volunteers who have returned for nearly every Blitz, or folks jumping out of their comfort zone to pitch in✨ MILWAUKEE SHOWS UP!❤️

Join us in celebrating the Harambee community and the work of VGI and Sauce MKE over the years on Sunday, June 28th from 12pm-5pm we’ll have free food, entertainment, games, bike repairs, haircuts, and more!!

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re feeling thankful for the connections made, the partnerships built, and the community that continues to support this work (you!).

We’re heading into 2026 with excitement as we grow as an organization and expand the ways we serve our community. It’s a new year, but our commitment remains the same: showing up to meet the needs of our community.

Those conversations were included in a story for All Things Considered, as part of a broader discussion about the current administration.
